Glencore Copper is seeking a Principal Mining Engineer – Underground to provide strategic mine planning expertise across our African copper operations. This role will be based in our Maidenhead office in England and will support operations and projects in Africa.

Our Team
The African Regional Technical team is an essential function responsible for providing strategic planning and mine engineering, geology, geotechnical engineering, metallurgy and processing and TSF technical support to Glencore’s Copper operations and projects in the DRC. This team plays a pivotal role in delivering best-practice operational performance and long-term strategy while driving Glencore’s ambitious growth agenda.
The Opportunity
As Principal Mining Engineer – Underground, you will be responsible for providing technical mining expertise and strategic guidance to Glencore’s Copper operating sites and development projects in Africa. You will play a key role in identifying opportunities for operational improvements, implementing innovative mining strategies, and optimizing resource development planning. This senior role involves managing complex mining operations, solving engineering challenges, ensuring compliance with safety and environmental standards, and optimizing mining processes to improve efficiency and profitability.
Key Responsibilities
* Provide technical leadership in underground mining engineering, influencing key business decisions and operational strategies.
* Lead and drive the preparation of Reserve Estimates and Reports, and act as a Competent Person for Reserves Reporting under the JORC code where required.
* Support the review and development of Life of Asset (LoA) plans, budgets, and operational strategies.
* Develop and optimize underground mine planning processes, including Mining Method selection, Mine Design, Sequencing, Scheduling, Ventilation, and Backfill strategies.
* Conduct technical reviews and ensure alignment of Resource Development Planning (RDP) studies with business objectives.
* Oversee scenario analysis and the evaluation of innovative mining technologies.
* Drive continuous improvement initiatives across Glencore’s underground operations by integrating advanced engineering methodologies and industry best practices.
* Collaborate with regional and site-based teams to support technical assessments and operational improvements.
* Ensure effective and timely decision-making by providing expert insights into underground mining operations and projects.
* Represent Glencore Copper in industry forums and contribute to global knowledge sharing.
* Travel to Glencore-owned sites within Africa, and other sites globally as required
Operating Context
* Identify and develop enabling projects to support business plans.
* Conduct gap analyses on underground mining planning systems and capabilities.
* Benchmark global best practices and implement lessons learned across Glencore’s operations.
* Review LoA plans and monitor execution to ensure alignment with strategic objectives.
* Lead participation in PFS and Feasibility Studies, ensuring high-quality technical deliverables.
* Work to agreed business deliverables, adapting to changing priorities as needed.
* Autonomy and self-directed work are critical in this role.
* Expect up to 30% travel to South Africa and the DRC to collaborate with regional and site-based teams.
Your Training, Skills & Expertise
* Bachelor’s Degree in Mine Engineering or a related discipline
* 15+ years of experience in underground mining across operations, corporate engineering, consulting, and major project studies, or equivalent.
* Professional certification or registration or in process of obtaining as a Chartered Engineer or equivalent in mining engineering.
* Proven track record in delivering advanced mining studies (PFS and Feasibility Studies) to an industry-leading standard.
* Extensive expertise in long-term planning, schedule optimization, and underground mine design.
* Proficiency in mining software applications, preferably Deswik.
* Strong knowledge of various underground mining methods and their practical applications.
* Demonstrated ability to influence and lead teams across different operational and corporate environments.
* High level of business acumen with the ability to influence key stakeholders and senior leadership.
* Excellent written and oral communication skills.
* Bilingual in English/French would be highly beneficial.
