We are looking for an enthusiastic and committed Band 7 Day Care Unit Manager within the Drug Development Unit. The unit provides specialist facilities for the care oncologic patients within Phase 1 clinical trials.
The successful candidate will be an oncology nurse with proven leadership skills and the vision and passion to help develop existing service and optimise high quality patient care. Being a good team player they will work with the Matron and nursing team leaders to help foster good communication and improved processes to enhance the patient pathway. Main duties of the job
To provide strong clinical leadership for the nursing and support workers that is motivating, supportive and sets clear boundaries resulting in high quality, evidence-led, safe patient care
To manage the resources for the clinical area within budgetary limitations e.g. finance, equipment and staff (including temporary staff)
To be the primary point of liaison with other research teams within the trust and practice educators, to aid facilitation of Phase I trials in tumour specific clinical units
To fulfil an ambassadorial role for the unit and trust when liaising and negotiating trial services with pharmaceutical companies, research networks, auditors and other frequent visitors from collaborative research sites
To maintain awareness of current advances in cancer treatment, care and research. Using relevant educational opportunities, to maintain the highest standards and up-to-date care offered to the patient with cancer
To assist in the regular site monitoring visits and trial audits
To ensure quality of trial conduct in accordance with the Clinical Trials Directive and the International Conference for Harmonization guidelines for Good Clinical Practice
Detailed job description and main responsibilities
To complete the first level assessment of patients with cancerand their families to gain an understanding of their physiological, psycho-social, spiritual and cultural needs and to develop a positive, realistic and supportive attitude to ensure that those needs are met. To plan, deliver and evaluate their care throughout their attendance for day treatments or assessments. To be a clinical expert in the specialities that relate to the ward
To liaise and work closely with relevant multi-disciplinary team members, including Clinical Nurse Specialists and Specialist Sisters in the provision of professional cancer nursing service
To recognise and respond to patients’ changing condition, using knowledge, skills and experience to direct, support and manage both staff and the situation. Provide support to staff during and after emergency situations, including debriefs and clinical supervision as necessary

Essential criteria

2. Evidence of ongoing professional development

3. Qualification in oncology or speciality Diploma or Degree level study (or equivalent) Recognised teaching qualification
4. Recognised chemotherapy qualification
Experience
Essential criteria
5. Experience in intravenous drug administration
6. Sufficient post registration nursing experience in oncology or speciality to be confident and competent in using the required skills to do the job
7. Experience in chemotherapy administration
Desirable criteria
8. Experience in Clinical Management
9. Evidence of relevant teaching experience
10. Knowledge and understanding of clinical trials management

Flu Vaccination – What We Expect of our Staff
At The Royal Marsden we have an immune compromised patient population who we must protect as much as we can against the flu virus. Each year, seasonal flu affects thousands of people in the UK. Occurring mainly in winter, it is an infectious respiratory disease capable of producing symptoms ranging from those similar to a common cold, through to very severe or even fatal disease.
The wellbeing of our staff and patients is of the upmost importance to us, and it is the expectation of The Royal Marsden that all patient-facing staff have an annual flu vaccination, provided free of charge by the Trust.
