Attendance Officer

Job Description:
We are seeking an Attendance Officer to join a dedicated secondary school in Tameside, starting ASAP. The Attendance Officer will play a crucial role in monitoring and improving student attendance, ensuring that all students are attending school regularly and punctually. This role is vital to the school’s commitment to academic achievement and student welfare. The successful candidate will work closely with students, parents, teachers, and the pastoral team to promote good attendance habits, tackle attendance-related issues, and support the school’s overall attendance strategy.
Key Responsibilities:
* Monitoring Attendance: Track and monitor student attendance on a daily basis, identifying patterns and issues relating to absences.
* Attendance Data: Accurately record and report on student attendance using the school’s data management systems. Provide regular reports to senior leadership on attendance trends and concerns.
* Support and Intervention: Contact parents and guardians regarding unexplained or poor attendance, offering support and guidance to improve student engagement and attendance.
* Early Intervention: Work proactively with students who have high levels of absence, providing early intervention strategies to prevent further absenteeism.
* Collaboration with Pastoral Team: Collaborate with the pastoral and safeguarding teams to support students with ongoing attendance issues, and contribute to strategies to improve student welfare.
* Promoting Attendance: Lead initiatives and campaigns to promote good attendance across the school, encouraging students to value their education and attend regularly.
* Liaising with External Agencies: Liaise with external agencies, such as local authorities or support services, to support students and families where attendance is a concern.
* Record Keeping and Compliance: Maintain accurate records of attendance-related communications and interventions, ensuring that all actions are documented in accordance with school policies and procedures.
* Policy Implementation: Ensure the school’s attendance policies and procedures are followed consistently and fairly.
Essential Qualifications & Skills:
* Experience working in an administrative role, ideally within a school or educational setting.
* Strong understanding of the importance of good attendance and its impact on student achievement.
* Excellent organisational skills and attention to detail.
* Strong communication skills, with the ability to effectively engage with students, parents, and staff.
* A compassionate and supportive approach, with the ability to manage sensitive situations with tact and professionalism.
* Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
* Proficient in using IT systems for data entry and report generation (e.g., SIMS, Excel).
* Knowledge of school attendance policies and procedures is desirable but not essential.
