Dock Master (Associated British Ports) – Humber – Permanent
ARM is delighted to be the exclusive recruitment partner of Associated British Ports in the search for a Dock Master (Marine Technical) to be based in their Humber.
This is a truly unique opportunity to lead the delivery of safe, compliant and efficient marine operations within the individual limits, of the ports of Immingham, Grimsby, Hull and Goole, in accordance with ABP Marine Safety Management Systems, the Port Marine Safety Code (PMSC) and Health & Safety Executive requirements.
This position is also a great opportunity for an experienced Harbour Master to act as the departmental lead for port development projects, and for marine infrastructure and critical asset management, providing appropriate marine technical expertise and ensuring the management of safety of navigation risk and conservancy objectives.
Other key responsibilities include (but not exhaustive to);
-Serve as the Dock Master for the Statutory Harbour Authority’s jurisdiction, fulfilling duties as defined by relevant legislation and the departmental structure.
-Lead port development projects, marine infrastructure initiatives, and critical asset management, providing marine technical expertise while ensuring navigational safety and conservancy objectives are met.
-Collaborate closely with the Operations team to address port requirements, manage incidents, and support other operational activities.
-Oversee the implementation of the Marine Safety Management System, ensuring compliance with relevant legislation, ABP Marine Policy, the Port Marine Safety Code (PMSC), and the company’s Health, Safety, Environmental, and HR policies.
-Assume operational responsibility for managing serious marine casualties or incidents, including leading investigations and liaising with the HSE, MCA, and MAIB as required.
-Maintain strong relationships with dock users, adjacent Harbour Authorities, and regulatory bodies, ensuring effective communication and coordination.
-Support the preparation, monitoring, and execution of the departmental capital and operational budgets, ensuring resources are effectively allocated.
-Manage, develop, and train the marine staff, ensuring team members are equipped with the knowledge and skills to operate independently and effectively in day-to-day activities.
The ideal candidate will have extensive experience within a Maritime environment working as a Harbour Master, Port Manager or other relevant senior level experience in port management or in managing a statutory authority as well as having an excellent track record of leading, motivating and developing a team.
You will have all-encompassing commercial acumen, including cost control and managing budgets, along with a true desire to consistently deliver an excellent customer and visitor experience.
The successful candidate will have an extensive understanding of the Port Marine Safety Code and all relevant port/dock legislation and have an adaptable personality to deal with a transitional environment.
A STCW II/2 Master, Chief Mate qualification or UK Harbour Masters Diploma with relevant experience is essential for this position.
