Job overview
The Cellular Pathology department at Calderdale Royal Hospital is seeking to recruit a HCPC registered Bank Biomedical Scientist with an accredited degree to join our friendly team.
The department is UKAS accredited and IBMS approved for training. Cellular pathology covers histology, non-gynae cytology, andrology, and the mortuaries. The successful candidate will be involved in health and safety, training, and quality in all areas of the department.
We currently process approximately 28,000 histology samples, around 13,000 immunohistochemistry tests using the Ventana Benchmark Ultra, 2,500 non-gynae samples, and 3,000 andrology samples.
We are committed to quality and improvement. We are currently in the process of introducing digital pathology to the department.

Main duties of the job
* To act in a scientific role and to carry out all routine investigations within the department, following necessary training, ensuring the quality of the service.
* To assist in the provision of the cellular pathology and mortuary service for the trusts hospitals and CCGs by providing knowledge and technical skills to process, analyse, understand, and interpret results of diagnostic tests.
* Rotate on a regular basis through the different sections of the department and take part in the extended working rota.
* To ensure health and safety is maintained, train junior members of staff, and be involved with quality and service development through laboratory and clinical audit.
* Continuous professional development will be essential for this post and further study will be encouraged.

* To be competent in all the areas of Cellular Pathology.
* To be a point of reference to junior staff, providing advice and supervising other members of staff.
* To coordinate work and staff within their areas in the absence of a specialist Biomedical Scientist.
* To maintain UKAS accreditation and HTA compliance.
* To participate and adhere to Health and Safety requirements.
* To have a good understanding of the Pathology Laboratory Information Management System (LIMS).

Qualifications
* State registration with the HCPC
* Degree in Biomedical Science
Knowledge
* Experience in a pathology laboratory
* Experience in all areas of the cellular pathology department.
* Supervision and training of MLA, associate practitioners, trainee BMS, and BMS staff.
* Experience of laboratory and clinical audit
* Experience of UKAS accreditation and HTA
* Andrology experience
* Non-gynae cytology experience
Practical/Personal Qualities
* Must be organised and have excellent time management skills
