Role Summary:
The Global Head of Stewardship is a key leadership role within Northern Trust Asset Management, responsible for driving the investment stewardship strategy and initiatives, aligning activities with client and market expectations. Reporting to the Head of Investment Platform Services and collaborating with the Global Head of Sustainable Investing Integration, this role leads a global team of stewardship professionals and engages in investor collaborations to enhance long-term financial performance across over $1 trillion in assets under management. The position is highly visible and requires an effective marketplace presence.
Primary Duties and Responsibilities:
1. Strategic Leadership: Develop and implement a comprehensive investment stewardship strategy aligned with Northern Trust and client values. Lead and mentor a global team of stewardship specialists, fostering a collaborative environment. Serve as Chair of the Proxy Voting Committee and participate in other organizational committees. Build relationships with institutional investors, proxy advisory firms, and industry associations to promote responsible investing and influence industry standards. Stay informed on industry trends, regulations, and best practices, translating them into actionable strategies. Collaborate with legal, compliance, research, and portfolio management teams to ensure coordinated stewardship efforts.
2. Set Direction for Stewardship Activities: Formulate strategies for proxy voting and engagement with portfolio companies, including research, analysis, and dialogue to promote governance and sustainability improvements. Report on findings, focusing on material ESG risks and opportunities, ensuring compliance with legal and fiduciary standards. Collaborate with portfolio managers and research teams to incorporate client views and align stewardship activities with sustainable investing themes. Develop engagement milestones, leverage KPIs, and enhance active ownership policies. Engage with fundamental investors and senior management on high-stakes proxy votes and lead investor coalitions on key initiatives.
3. Serve as Senior Marketplace Spokesperson: Communicate stewardship efforts and results to clients, demonstrating transparency. Represent the stewardship team at internal and external events, engaging with stakeholders including investors, regulators, and NGOs. Support Principles for Responsible Investing and contribute to annual reporting assessments.
Necessary Experience, Education, and Attributes:
* Minimum of 15 years in investment management, with direct stewardship experience.
* Master's degree or higher in sustainability, finance, business administration, or related fields; ESG certifications are a plus.
* Preferred qualifications include an MBA and/or CFA designation.
* Proven leadership in managing teams, setting strategic direction, and achieving results.
* Excellent communication and interpersonal skills to influence stakeholders at all levels.
* Deep knowledge of ESG principles, proxy voting, responsible investing, and relevant regulations.
* Strong analytical skills, client-centric approach, and problem-solving capabilities.
* Self-motivated, team-oriented, with project management experience under demanding deadlines.
