Outline of the role
The Health, Safety & Wellbeing (HSW) Lead is responsible for supporting the SPA (Strategic Pipeline Alliance) SHEA Manager in implementing strategic priorities related to health, safety, and wellbeing across pre-construction and construction activities. This role involves guiding delivery teams on HSW practices, ensuring compliance with the Health, Safety, Environment Management System (HSEMS), and proactively identifying and mitigating risks. Additionally, the HSW Lead conducts inspections, audits, and incident investigations, ensuring that safety measures align with SPA's standards while fostering a high-performance, safety-first culture within the organisation.
This role also emphasises team leadership, coaching HSW advisors, and facilitating cross-team collaboration. The HSW Lead is involved in delivering HSW training, supporting the development of documentation, and maintaining high standards in health and safety compliance. Through strong interpersonal and analytical skills, the HSW Lead ensures that the organisation meets its health and safety objectives, while also playing a key role in promoting a culture where safety and wellbeing are prioritised throughout all levels of the business.
As a SHEQ Manager your duties will include:
1. Support the SPA SHEA Manager in delivering health, safety, and wellbeing (HSW) strategies across pre-construction and construction activities.
2. Provide guidance and advice to delivery teams on health and safety practices, ensuring compliance with the Health, Safety, Environment Management System (HSEMS).
3. Conduct Targeted Verification Inspections (TVIs), Construction Safety Inspection Reports (CSIRs), and lead HSW advisory visits.
4. Lead and support incident investigations and ensure proper reporting and resolution of HSW concerns.
5. Develop and deliver HSW training programs and upskill team members on health and safety principles.
6. Oversee and mentor HSW advisors to ensure high-quality outputs in inspections, auditing, and reporting.
7. Collaborate closely with other teams, including the environmental team, to share knowledge and improve safety standards.
8. Monitor health and safety risk, develop mitigation plans, and escalate critical concerns as necessary.
9. Review and contribute to the development of safety documentation, including Construction Phase Plans (CPP) and Risk Assessments and Method Statements (RAMS).
10. Promote and uphold a culture of safety and wellbeing throughout the organization, encouraging proactive engagement with safety initiatives.
Required Skills and Experience:
11. Previous experience in health, safety, and wellbeing (HSW) within pre-construction and construction environments.
12. NEBOSH Construction certificate and working towards or holding IOSH membership (CertIOSH/CMIOSH).
13. Strong problem-solving skills, with the ability to innovate and implement digital solutions to enhance safety performance.
14. Proven ability to lead and mentor teams, providing direction and support to ensure high-quality outputs.
15. Experience in incident investigation, report writing, and developing safety documentation (e.g., CPP, RAMS).
16. Strong communication, negotiation, and conflict resolution skills, capable of influencing stakeholders at all levels.
