Working at MSJ

MSJ offers a range of boarding options (ages 7 upwards), to fit in with the demands of modern family life and students can choose from full, weekly or flexi-boarding.

Teacher of Geography-
* Part-time ( up to 0.5 of a timetable), Permanent, Required from 1 September 2025
* Reports to the Head of Geography
The Geography Department at Malvern St James
The Geography Department aims to develop an exciting, intellectually challenging and engaging curriculum for Geography alongside a rigorous assessment structure. It is innovative and forward thinking and has been at the forefront of digital learning in School. There is an emphasis on fieldwork, and we encourage creative and collaborative work, as well as ensuring every opportunity for stretch, challenge and enquiry, where the students demonstrate a desire to learn and engage with the many geographical issues that are central to society.
The Head of Geography works closely with the Deputy Head Academic who is also an experienced Geographer and teaches in the Department on a part time basis. Members of the Department work closely with each other in a relationship based on collaboration and an enthusiastic exchange of ideas. Geography is a popular choice for GCSE (Pearson Edexcel IGCSE) and A Level (Pearson Edexcel) and holds an excellent reputation within the School, achieving consistently high examination results. IGCSE results were 92% Grade 9-7 and A Level results were 100% A*-B in 2024.
Many students have chosen to continue their academic careers studying Geography at some of the top universities in the country, including Oxford, Cambridge and Durham and we are delighted that many students have also chosen to study Geography-related degrees. We run university preparation and Oxbridge lessons. We seek to develop a real passion for Geography amongst our students throughout the School.
There are two designated Geography classrooms and the Department makes full use of digital and e-learning resources, especially Class Notebook and Microsoft Teams. The Department holds school membership with the Royal Geographical Society and the Geographical Association and we subscribe to digital resources such as Digimaps and Geofact sheets.
Fieldwork is seen as an extremely important part of our curriculum and there are fieldwork trips in each year of Key Stage 3. In Year 7 we currently visit the Malvern Hills focusing on Ordnance Survey map skills and geology and also visit Birmingham where urban geography fieldwork skills are developed. In Year 8 we carry out coastal studies on the Glamorgan Coast whilst in Year 9fieldwork is focused on the impact of globalisation in Stratford. In Year 10 there is a one-day fieldtrip to Worcester to look at urban land use and urban regeneration, whilst in Year 11 we have a residential fieldtrip to North Wales. In Year 12 and 13 there are a variety of fieldwork opportunities including days to the Dorset or Merseyside coast, local woods for carbon fieldwork and Birmingham for regeneration; in addition, there is a biennial Geography fieldtrip to Iceland. We have a vibrant ‘Geography is Going Places’ lecture programme to enrich the curriculum and access online lectures as well as in-person talks, viewing these as excellent opportunities for extending our students’ educational experience, preparing them for the academic rigour of university. We host an annual A Level conference for Midlands schools.
