Main duties of the job
This is a substantive consultant post in respiratory medicine, contributing to the inpatient and outpatient care of adult patients with cystic fibrosis, primary ciliary dyskinesia and bronchiectasis. The successful applicant will join a team of five Consultants in the suppurative lung disease service and a wider team of a further 23 Consultant Respiratory Physicians. The CF service has a well-established large and busy multidisciplinary team including specialist nurses, dietitians, physiotherapists, psychologists, pharmacists, social workers and resident doctors. Southampton is one of the four national Adult PCD specialist management centres and the successful candidate will work with the lead consultant, Dr Mary Carroll, specialist nurses and specialist physiotherapist to deliver this service.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities
The principal duties of this post are to contribute to a comprehensive clinical suppurative lung disease service. This encompasses adult Cystic Fibrosis (CF), Primary Ciliary Dyskinesia (PCD) and bronchiectasis patients.
Specifically you will provide:
- Inpatient and outpatient and regional care to cystic fibrosis and PCD patients under the regional Wessex Adult CF service and specialist PCD service.
- Support to the Cystic Fibrosis Home IV service by providing virtual ward rounds.
- Care to inpatient and outpatient adult non-CF bronchiectasis patients.
- There may be opportunities to contribute to other related specialist services within the department, based on service need and the particular skills of the successful applicant.
- You will have the opportunity to contribute actively to the diverse commercial and academic research program of the department.
The successful candidate must be registered with the GMC with a valid licence to practise.
Individuals wishing to apply must be registered with the General Medical Council (GMC).
The successful candidate will be employed under the terms and conditions of service for Consultants (England) 2003.

Person specification
Qualifications, Training & Experience
* MBBS, MBChB or equivalent.
* GMC registration with a licence to practise.
* Training and wide experience in respiratory medicine sufficient to practise as an independent consultant.
* Experience in managing patients with cystic fibrosis both as inpatients and outpatients.
* Full and specialist registration with the General Medical Council (GMC) or within 6 months of CCT.
* Experience in the investigation and management of patients with PCD and other suppurative lung conditions.
* Experience of clinical research.
Aptitudes and Skills
* Evidence and ability to communicate and liaise effectively with patients and colleagues (verbal and written communication skills in English).
* Ability to communicate efficiently.
* Ability to work effectively with good time management skills.
* Ability to take responsibility and provide leadership where appropriate.
* Ability to work in a team environment and to develop effective working relationships on an individual and multidisciplinary basis with all levels of staff.
* Formal management and leadership training.
* Experience of working within a large MDT.
