Swansea Bay University Health Board hosts 3 key hospital sites, Morriston our centre of excellence for complex and acute care; Singleton Hospital focussing predominantly on Oncology hosting the South West Wales Cancer Centre and Neath Port Talbot Hospital our new centre for Orthopaedics and Stroke Rehabilitation
The successful candidate will join a team of 10 Consultant Acute Physicians with various subspecialty interests and will support the innovative re-design of Acute Medicine Services for the patients of Swansea Bay. The service is undergoing significant transformation, closely working with our new Frailty Unit, Medical SDEC and Integrated Discharge Hub.
Main duties of the job
The Acute Care Physician will focus on assessing, diagnosing, and treating various medical conditions mainly on adult patients who needs urgent medical needs or are cases of emergencies. The Acute Unit operates 24/7 and is staffed by a multidisciplinary clinical team focused on acute medical care with the objective of providing early expert assessment and treatment of acute medical illnesses.
Consultants and Doctors working in Acute Medicine are responsible for the assessment, investigation, diagnosis, and management of patients who develop severe conditions quickly which also can be life-threatening. This will be a role to develop and improve the activity within acute medicine and also acute medicine within the Same Day Emergency Care (SDEC).

Job responsibilities
The principal duties of this post are to deliver a high-quality service to Acute Internal Medicine patients. The appointee would be expected to:
Provide clinical expertise and responsibility to the service in terms of knowledge, clinical activity and guidance as needed. Clinical and administrative responsibility for the proper functioning of the Acute Internal Medicine Department. Develop standards, procedures and robust systems in the department to ensure safe, high quality and efficient patient care from the point of entry into the department to admission or discharge from the department. Supervision of the junior medical staff in the Unit who will have an opportunity to learn on a one-to-one basis on both formal and informal rounds and also on ad hoc basis throughout the day. Play an active part in educational programmes for junior medical staff, including formal teaching sessions and clinical audits relevant to the needs of the Unit. To teach and train staff in other medical disciplines, nursing and support staff as appropriate. Maintain an up-to-date job plan and personal development plan Register and participate in the appropriate CPD scheme with the Royal College of Physicians. Work with colleagues to provide a consultant-led service with the highest standard of care. Work with the multi-professional team to develop care pathways and clinical guideline
We will support advanced clinical training, alongside leadership development for successful candidates. Above all, we are seeking colleagues who will enable a health vision for the population of West Wales by advancing our Acute Medicine service to deliver at the highest level.
The post will involve close collaboration with our newly developing Frailty team to support and these 5 posts are available alongside our separate recruitment drive for 5 Acute Geriatricians as we aim deliver a whole system redesign of the Integrated Acute Medical Pathway.
