Brief overview of role
This is a high-profile leadership role for a talented technical professional to work closely with UKCS operators to deliver the NSTA Strategy for the UK and support the industry to achieve the net zero target.
This role will primarily focus on carbon capture and storage (CCS) projects and will encompass stewardship of operators working on all phases of a carbon storage licence (CS Licence). This includes supporting the Exploration Team in the licence application process and stewardship of the Assess and Define phases of a CCS project, through to storage permit approval and operational injection of CO2 supporting the drive to net zero carbon by 2050. The team are also responsible for stewarding late life assets which are on a pathway to CO2 Storage; so some hydrocarbon stewardship may be required.
In addition to a first degree, or equivalent, in a relevant engineering, geoscience or scientific discipline, the successful candidate will be able to demonstrate considerable technical, leadership, strategic, commercial and joint venture experience. Previous experience in CCS activities or other energy sectors is desirable. You will be required to line manage and work closely with other members of the UK Carbon Transportation and Storage Team (CTS) and also more widely across the NSTA organisation.
This role requires a team player with a proactive approach and the ability to manage a high level of responsibility and provide leadership to some of their colleagues in the CTS team. You will also need strong communication, interpersonal and influencing skills as well as technical expertise and credibility to win the respect of both colleagues and industry representatives.
The role presents an excellent opportunity to genuinely influence the development of a nascent industry in the UKCS and build a strong external profile and network in the industry.
The role will require leading and liaising with a multidisciplinary team including geoscientists, reservoir engineers, facility engineers, decommissioning engineers, business managers and development engineers.
Detailed job description and key responsibilities
As Carbon Transportation and Storage (CTS) Stewardship Lead, reporting to the Area Manager and working together with the other CTS Stewardship Lead in the Team, you will be required to provide leadership, guidance, management of activities and coaching to a multi-disciplinary Technical Team to ensure appropriate regulatory decision making, and management of the stewardship of Carbon Transportation and Storage (CTS) projects from permit application and subsequent build, operate and post closure monitoring.
* Development of new stewardship tools, guidance and processes for the new Carbon Transportation and Storage industry development of Team members and in particular technical competency to support their roles in stewarding CTS licensees.
* Ensure consistency of approach to stewardship across all Carbon Storage licences and to consideration of all Carbon Storage Permit applications.
The key objectives of the role are to:
* Performance Management for a number of the CTS Team, including Objective setting
* Manage training requirements within allocated budget
* Showcase and reward excellent delivery.
* Ensure distribution within the CTS Team of Single Point Contacts (‘SPC’) for all stewardship engagements. The role will hold very limited SPC responsibilities, elevating the position out of the day-to-day interactions.
* Ensure all stewardship engagements align with the CTS Teams Stewardship Strategy & Objectives.
* Support the Exploration Team in the licence application process and stewardship of the Appraise phase of a project.
* Provide guidance to the CTS Team on developing the NSTA’s Carbon Transportation and Stewardship powers, responsibilities and expectations.
* Provide strategic, focused & prioritised direction aligned with key decisions and regulatory consents to the CTS Team to assist in development of stewardship engagements which support the NSTA priorities.
* Provide coaching and mentoring to the CTS Team. Be accountable for recommendations and/or approvals of specific regulatory decisions; and provide briefings as required.
Specialist Skills, Qualifications, Experience, Licenses, Memberships or Language
Essential:
* Degree (or equivalent) in Engineering, Geoscience or related subject. Significant experience in the UKCS, preferably with an Operator. Significant experience in development planning, asset management or subsurface management.
* Significant experience of oil and gas Joint Ventures including joint venture forums (specifically Technical Committees).
* Excellent communication skills – written and verbal, particularly technical summaries and management presentations.
* Demonstrable ability to co-ordinate and integrate a multi-discipline team.
* Sound decision making. Demonstrable results in driving improvements and implementing change.
* Ability to make recommendations on complex decisions ensuring policies and procedures are adhered to.
* Well-developed analytical skills and sound judgement to manage varied and sometimes complex issues.
Desirable:
* Understanding of the UKCS licence framework and the consents required to inject carbon dioxide into UKCS licences.
* Experience in coaching and mentoring a multi-disciplined team. Prior experience or exposure to CCS projects.
