Band 8A Clinical Scientist and Medical Physics Expert in Diagnostic Radiology
An exciting opportunity has become available for a motivated and enthusiastic Clinical Scientist and MPE to join our friendly and expanding Radiation Protection team at the Royal Berkshire NHS Foundation Trust.
The Radiation Protection Section aims to ensure the safety of all patients, visitors and staff who come into contact with ionising radiation and lasers.
A wide range of safety activities are provided by the section's staff for many departments including Radiology, Nuclear Medicine, Cardiology, Radiotherapy, Urology, wards and theatres.
These include the statutory provision of Radiation Protection Adviser (RPA), Medical Physics Expert (MPE) in Diagnostic Radiology, Laser Protection Adviser (LPA), Radioactive Waste Adviser(RWA) and MR Safety Adviser.
The department provides comprehensive radiation protection, diagnostic radiology physics and X-ray services, patient and staff dosimetry audits, QA instrument calibration service, and staff training.
Staff also advise on the application of relevant legislation and develop processes and procedures to help Trust departments achieve good compliance.
Main duties of the job
This post holder will assist in providing a radiation safety service to the 2 Trusts and other organisations that have radiation safety contracts with the Department. The majority of the work however is based at the Royal Berkshire NHS Foundation Trust.
Applicants should either have state registration as a Clinical Scientist and work toward to MPE certification or be about to complete their training as a Clinical Scientist with Imaging with Ionising Radiation as a specialty.
You should hold a full driving license as there will be some travel across sites.

Qualifications
Essential
1. Good (1st or 2nd class) Honours degree in a relevant subject
2. MSc and PhD in radiation protection, medical physics (or equivalent)
3. IPEM Certificate of completion of Post-qualification Higher Training or equivalent (e.g. Corporate Membership of IPEM)
Registration/Accreditation
Essential
1. State registration as a Clinical Scientist
2. Accreditation as Medical Physics Expert with RPA2000
Desirable
1. RPA 2000 accreditation as a Radiation Protection Adviser (RPA)
Experience
Essential
1. Broad knowledge of radiation and associated areas within Medical Physics.
2. Expert and specialist knowledge and full understanding of all the areas of legislation, approved codes and good guidance, applicable to the use of ionising and non-ionising radiations in the field of diagnostic area, dental area, radiotherapy, biomedical research where appropriate.
3. Advanced theoretical and practical knowledge and deep understanding of the nature, use, risks and radiation protection of ionising radiations including X-rays, gamma rays, electrons & neutrons.
