Job Description:
An exciting opportunity has arisen as the College seeks to appoint a Health and Safety Manager as part of the College Operational Management Team. The Health and Safety Manager supports the College in achieving its strategic aims and objectives by implementing a robust and effective health and safety framework. This role drives strategic change through the systematic enhancement of health and safety practices, ensuring staff are well-trained, competent, and equipped to maintain a safe working environment.
Key Responsibilities:
1. Lead the development and the consistent implementation of the College’s Health and Safety Policy and Procedures, to meet its needs and comply with legal and good practice standards. Ensure that these are reviewed annually and are approved by the Board of Management.
2. Advise the Board and the Senior Management Team on the implications of current and emerging health, safety and wellbeing legislation, including evaluating options, making recommendations and generating action plans to ensure compliance across the organisation.
3. Routinely provide reports on Health and Safety for Senior Management and for Board of Management and its Standing Committees on health and safety performance and compliance.
4. Contribute to the creation of a culture that focuses on health, safety and wellbeing.
5. Lead on safeguarding the safety and security of students, staff, visitors, and contractors within Glasgow Kelvin College premises.
6. Design, organise and assist in identification and, where appropriate, delivery of Health & Safety training programmes for staff which encompass preventative and reactive measures such as first aid, stress awareness, fire safety, food safety, etc.
Skills, Knowledge and Experience:
You will be skilled in translating health and safety legislation into operational practice; have up-to-date knowledge of legal regulations and current Health and Safety legislation and good practice; be an effective leader, contributing to the development of a health, safety and wellbeing strategy and its delivery.
You will have a background in occupational health and safety, environmental safety or a related field; be experienced in designing, implementing and monitoring policies, procedures, practice and systems in health and safety in a wide range of areas; delivering health and safety training and development, ensuring compliance with safety standards and regulations; conducting health and safety inspections and preparing reports of all operations; ensuring that the workplace is free of hazards and that all employees follow safe work practices; investigating any accidents or incidents that occur in the workplace and proposing recommendations to ensure future recurrence is avoided.
You will ideally be educated to degree level or equivalent; or possess relevant equivalent experience and possess a relevant Health and Safety qualification to provide “competent advice” with regard to Health & Safety legislation and practice.
