This is an exciting opportunity to lead a small, dedicated team with a broad spectrum of techniques. Supporting and serving our clinical partners throughout the South West Peninsula, for a suitably qualified and motivated Biomedical Scientist looking to make a difference in a UKAS accredited environment.
The service provides:
1. Clinical neuropathology support for neuroscience specialities
2. Intra-operative diagnostic theatre liaison
3. Neurosurgical biopsy histology, including fully integrated reports with molecular biology
4. Diagnostic pathology of muscle and nerve, including in-house biopsy facilities
5. Neuropathology autopsies including High risk TSE/CJD
6. Post-mortem neurohistology including work for H.M. Coroner and forensic service
7. Intra-Epithelial Nerve Fibre Density (IENFD) from skin punch biopsy
8. Cerebrospinal fluid cytology
9. Vitreous fluid cytology
10. Ocular pathology
11. Electron microscopy – Muscle, Nerve, CADASIL
12. Research
Applicants will hold registration with the Health and Care Professions Council, MSc Biomedical Science degree or equivalent. Prior management experience would be advantageous. Training will be available to support the development of the successful candidate.
Pathology is going through an exciting time with new LIMS and potential move to a purpose-built laboratory facility.
To take responsibility for the management and the coordination of the clinical technical service provided by the Neuropathology Laboratory for the Peninsula with specific reference to the service delivery, implementation and maintenance of Health and Safety, Quality, Personnel matters, Budget and the continuing need to develop this service to meet the expectation of the users.
To undertake scientific duties in the Neuropathology in order to facilitate the smooth running of the service.
To be responsible for the maintenance and running of specialist scientific equipment up to a value of £400,000.
To be responsible for the co-ordination and day-to-day maintenance of the electron microscope.
To act as Health and Safety Advisor for Cellular and Anatomical Pathology.

Take technical and managerial charge of the technical service provided by Neuropathology ensuring results are produced in an accurate and timely manner.
To be responsible for the quality of work within the area and ensure that all staff working in this area meet the necessary standards of speed, quality and accuracy, appropriate to the level of experience and training.
To be responsible for the implementation and management of all internal quality control/quality assurance systems in the Neuropathology and continue to develop and coordinate laboratory policies for these systems. To lead the participation of the Department in the Neuropathology module of the National External Quality Assurance Scheme.
Develop, coordinate and maintain the Department’s programme of continuous service review in accordance with internal and external quality control systems and within the Trust’s framework of continuous quality improvement.
Assist in the process of continuous quality improvement. This will include audit, corrective action, preventative action and improvement processes.
To be responsible for the promotion, identification and implementation of efficiency measures within the section. Work with technical leads in the other sections to ensure that efficiency measures identified within the Department are implemented.
