This role offers the opportunity to drive breakthroughs in cutting-edge materials science, from concept to commercialisation.
Key Responsibilities:
1. Innovate & Experiment: Lead hands-on research to design, test, and optimize novel materials (e.g., high thermal conductivity polymers, semiconductor patterning materials, decarbonized heating/cooling solutions). Develop hypotheses, refine experimental techniques, and analyze results against theoretical models.
2. Model & Predict: Use computational tools to simulate material/device performance, validate experimental data, and guide R&D decisions.
3. Cross-Functional Collaboration: Partner with chemists, engineers, and external experts to translate fundamental insights into scalable solutions. Identify opportunities to leverage external facilities or partnerships.
4. Own Intellectual Leadership: Generate patentable concepts and expand the organization’s IP portfolio.
5. Drive Safety & Impact: Ensure rigorous adherence to lab safety protocols while advancing projects with commercial and environmental relevance.
6. Engage daily with multidisciplinary R&D teams to challenge ideas, share results, and solve complex technical problems.
7. Liaise with global stakeholders to align projects with strategic priorities and accelerate technology transfer.
8. Influence the roadmap of a world-class R&D organisation committed to sustainable innovation.
What We’re Looking For:
1. PhD in Physics, Electrical Engineering, or related field, with a strong foundation in material properties and experimental physics.
2. Proven ability to design experiments, interpret data, and propose novel hypotheses.
3. Curiosity-driven mindset with enthusiasm for interdisciplinary problem-solving.
4. Experience in testing novel materials/devices and improving functional performance.
5. Areas of interest include: Semiconductor Patterning, Decarbonisation of heating and cooling, ICT.
6. Background in modelling material/device behaviour or integrating materials into functional test structures.
7. Awareness of industrial R&D commercial dynamics.
8. Interest in diverse applications, from electronics to green technologies.
The company can offer a salary in the region of £40,000 for this role with flexibility; salary will be dependent on experience and skills. An additional benefits package is also available.
Candidates can be considered on both a full-time and part-time basis.
