Summary of the Role We seek a visionary part-time CTO with a wide breadth of experience to lead the technological vision, strategy and execution of our company. This is a complex industry and therefore demands a wide range of custom-made tech solutions to meet our customer requirements. Therefore, the ideal candidate will have a deep and updated understanding of one or more of the following areas: ecommerce/ recommerce, fintech/ payments, logistics, B2B2C or B2C marketplaces and/ or other digital products designed for the circular economy. This is a co-founder position in a pre-seed venture. So the CTO will play a pivotal role in driving product direction and innovation, beginning with customer pilots and a MVP. While building the product from the ground-up, the CTO will ensure the scalability of our technology stack and lead the development of our resale-as-a-service products over the longer-term. This role requires someone who can integrate technology strategy with business goals, collaborate cross-functionally, foster a culture of innovation, and stay ahead of the rapidly evolving resale-as-a-service industry landscape in order to position Pivot at the front of this exciting area. Problem We’re Solving We’re all familiar with the environmental impact of fast fashion. But fast retail – across categories like apparel, home goods, and electronics – is having a similarly devastating effect on our planet. Overproduction and underutilization of products are fueling waste, deforestation, and carbon emissions at unprecedented levels. Since 2000, global retail production has surged, and with it, the environmental toll. Many products are designed with a short lifecycle, contributing to waste and emissions. These linear systems of take, make, and dispose are unsustainable. The good news is consumer attitudes are shifting. The second-hand market is booming across retail categories, driven by a growing demand for sustainability and value. Preloved and recommerce segments are growing significantly faster than their new counterparts, projected to reach over $200 billion globally by 2028. The Problem and Opportunity for Retailers The rise of resale is not just a trend – it’s a structural shift. Consumers are demanding sustainable and circular options, and traditional retailers are struggling to adapt. For brands, resale presents a double-edged sword: a threat to their linear sales models and a significant missed opportunity. Most retailers today capture little to no value from the resale market. Recommerce is a massive and growing market opportunity for brands. By embracing circularity, retailers can deepen customer relationships, reduce acquisition costs, and build more resilient and sustainable business models. The challenge lies in simplifying and scaling the infrastructure to facilitate resale at scale – seamlessly integrating it into their operations while delivering exceptional customer experiences. That’s where we come in. Pivot empowers retailers to unlock the potential of recommerce. We provide the software, data insights, and infrastructure they need to launch and scale circular initiatives, capture the value of resale markets, and build a more sustainable future. Experience we’re looking for (two or more of the following) Full-Stack Engineer with Leadership Experience: The CTO will have strong full-stack skills and experience managing end-to-end product development, ideally from within startups. They need to be comfortable with both frontend (React, Vue.js, etc.) and backend (Node.js, Django, Ruby on Rails, etc.). DevOps-Focused Engineer: A developer who has experience building cloud-native applications with a focus on DevOps will be valuable, as we seek to automate infrastructure and scale easily. Product Engineer or Architect: A senior developer who has architectural experience and has built platforms from scratch before, especially if those platforms involve multiple API integrations, would be ideal. Experience in Circular Economy, Recommerce, Logistics or eCommerce: If possible, someone with experience in sectors like the circular economy, resale platforms, or marketplaces would have an edge, as they would understand the specific tech and operational challenges of such platforms. Attributes required for this position Entrepreneurial Spirit: as a co-founder, the CTO will be equally passionate about our business idea as we are. That means being willing to take risks and commit to the overall success of the company. Strategic Thinking: The ability to align technology strategies with customer requirements and broader business goals. We’re looking for someone with a forward-thinking vision who can anticipate industry trends and adapt the company's tech roadmap accordingly. Problem-Solving and Decision-Making: CTOs must be adept at identifying and solving complex technological challenges. Decisive decision-making, often under pressure, is critical to ensure smooth operations and project success. Business Acumen: Understanding the organization's industry, market dynamics, and competitive landscape is essential. CTOs must leverage technology to drive revenue growth and gain a competitive advantage. Project Management: Skills to manage complex IT projects, set priorities, and meet deadlines. Scrappiness and versatility - we are ambitious but at the beginning of our journey. We all have to be both strategic and willing to do what’s needed with limited resources to get to the next stage as fast as possible. What’s most important to Pivot Full-Stack Engineering & Architecture Skills: To build the product and set a solid foundation for future growth. Leadership & Strategic Vision: To lead and hire/contract specialists when needed, and to keep the company’s tech strategy aligned with business goals.
