Data Centre Shift Technician / Multi-Skilled Engineer (Electrical Bias)
Location: Hertfordshire / Essex / London Docklands
Salary: £48,000 - £52,000 + Bonus and Benefits
Shift Pattern: Continental Days and Nights 5 am - 5 pm
Position Overview: We are seeking a Data Centre Shift Technician / Multi-Skilled Engineer (Electrical Bias) to join our expanding team at a state-of-the-art Data Centre. This role offers long-term career stability and progression within a rapidly growing and future-proof industry.
You will be responsible for the maintenance, repair, and oversight of all critical infrastructure systems, including HVAC, electrical, and mechanical systems. The position involves working with a team of skilled engineers, ensuring 100% uptime and delivering services to the highest industry standards.
Key Responsibilities:
1. Operations & Maintenance:
o Perform planned preventative maintenance (PPM) and reactive repairs across all critical systems, including electrical, HVAC, and mechanical infrastructure.
o Monitor and troubleshoot BMS, PMS, and CMS systems, ensuring site operations meet SLA and uptime requirements.
o Respond to Building Management System (BMS) alarms and conduct emergency repairs as necessary.
o Maintain evaporative cooling systems and domestic water systems to comply with L8 standards.
o Supervise engineering subcontractors to ensure compliance with contractual commitments and site protocols.
o Manage and enforce controls within the Permit to Work systems.
o Ensure all work is carried out in line with statutory and contractual deliverables.
2. Technical Oversight & Commissioning:
o Oversee M&E vendors delivering electrical and HVAC services, ensuring compliance with MOP/SOP/EOP procedures.
o Assist with commissioning and witness infrastructure upgrades and enhancements, including new facilities.
o Manage the Permit to Work system, ensuring all RAMS are accurate and compliant.
o Support and coordinate P1/P2/P3 incidents with shift managers and the Data Centre Manager.
3. Compliance & Documentation:
o Maintain site logbooks and statutory compliance records.
o Perform dynamic risk assessments and ensure all tasks comply with health and safety regulations.
o Prepare and review Method Statements and Risk Assessments (RAMS) for in-house and contractor works.
o Ensure up-to-date documentation and maintenance records, including REALM task sheets.
4. Client & Stakeholder Engagement:
o Act as the main point of contact for client services, attending planning meetings and fostering positive relationships.
o Collaborate with the Data Centre Manager and shift teams to ensure seamless service delivery.
o Deliver clear communication during shift handovers through logs, emails, and status boards.
5. Technical Responsibilities:
o Electrical Systems: Maintain and troubleshoot single-phase and three-phase systems, control panels, UPS, and power generators.
o HVAC Systems: Service and repair AHUs, FCUs, split systems, chillers, and variable speed drives.
o Fire & Safety Systems: Oversee fire suppression and detection systems and ensure proper maintenance.
o Water Treatment: Manage open/closed chilled water systems to ensure compliance with safety standards.
o Incident Management: Provide support for unplanned incidents or faults on-site.
Skills, Knowledge, and Experience:
Essential Experience:
* Proven experience in a critical environment (data centres, financial institutions, or similar).
* Hands-on expertise with UPS, generators, HVAC, and building management systems.
* Demonstrable success in coordinating and managing complex site activities.
* Experience in real-time incident and fault management.

Qualifications:
* C&G Level 3 or equivalent in electrical services/maintenance.
* 18th Edition IEE Wiring Regulations.
* Emergency First Aid at Work certification.
* HV Approved Person or equivalent (desirable).
* Confined Space Entry training (as required).
* Manual Handling Training (advantageous).
Skills:
* Excellent communication and customer service skills.
* Strong problem-solving abilities and decision-making under pressure.
* Ability to prepare Method Statements, Risk Assessments, and perform dynamic risk assessments.
* IT literate with experience using CAFM systems.
Additional Requirements:
* Security clearance (BPSS and SC) may be required or obtained.
* Reliable and self-motivated, with high personal integrity.
* Comfortable working independently and as part of a team.
* Flexible regarding working hours and available for overtime.
* PASMA & IPAF (preferred).
* Ability to ascend and descend vertical access equipment.
