Full Job Description
The Business Operations team is the backbone of our Libraries, Archives and Information service, and we are looking to recruit a Support Team member to add to this dedicated and enthusiastic team.
We are looking for applicants who have excellent communication skills, are familiar with using computer systems such as Microsoft Office, and are experienced drivers. This role includes liaising with different teams and members of the public, so excellent customer service skills are also important.
The work involves heavy manual handling with a large number of items, driving a long wheel-based van to deliver boxes of books to the libraries in Sheffield, and sorting out the books and boxes to be delivered to the libraries.
Daily checks of the building, opening and closing of the Central Library, reception at the delivery entrance of the library, and compliance tasks in the Central Library are also part of the role. This list is not exhaustive.
You will be based at the Central Library, Surrey Street in Sheffield. This post is for 37 hours per week, working on a two-week rota which includes working one early evening and a Saturday once every two weeks. Your working day will usually consist of deliveries for half a day, then being based in the Central Library for half a day, but cover for holidays may mean you are out delivering more often.
Interviews will take place on 7th and 8th May 2025. For further information about the posts and an informal chat, please email Andrew Slaughter.
We are investing in our workforce and promoting opportunities to our under-represented groups. We value equality, diversity, and inclusion and are focused on increasing the diversity of our workforce, particularly the number of Black, Asian, Minority Ethnic, Disabled, and LGBTQ+ people, so that our teams reflect the communities in the city we serve. We are also supporting staff with unpaid caring responsibilities to work flexibly.
It is a great time to join us, and we welcome your application. Under the Disability Confident Scheme, disabled applicants who meet the essential criteria of this job are guaranteed an interview.
Full-time employees work 37 hours for 52 weeks of the year, and we offer a generous holiday entitlement. We are open to discussions about a wide range of flexible working opportunities which benefit you and the Council, including reduced hour contracts, working part-time, or as a job share.
If you are appointed to this role, your starting salary will be at the bottom of the grade. If you provide pay slip evidence that your basic pay is greater than the bottom of the grade, we will consider starting you at the point of minimum advantage within the grade.
Equality of pay is extremely important to us. All roles at Sheffield City Council are going through an evaluation process which may result in changes to some pay arrangements from 2026. Find out more on our Sheff news page.
