Applicants must have full GMC Registration, a license to practise and be eligible for inclusion in the GMC Specialist Register. Those trained in the UK should have evidence of higher specialist training leading to CCT or be within 6 months of confirmed entry from the date of interview. Portfolio Pathway (formerly known as CESR - Certificate of Eligibility for Specialist Registration) route doctors are only eligible to apply for a substantive consultant post once it has been awarded. Non-UK applicants must demonstrate equivalent training.
Applications are welcome for the above Permanent, full-time (40 hours per week) post based in Royal Infirmary of Edinburgh and St Johns Hospital.
This post is a full-time 9 plus 1 (10 PA) clinical appointment to augment the current surgical service. The successful applicant will provide on-call and emergency cover for the general/UGI surgical service and on a separate rota, provide clinical supervision to the Trauma ward for four weeks of the year on a 1:13 rota. The Trauma component of the job excludes out of hours and weekend cover. The successful applicant would oversee management of Trauma patients, with involvement of other specialties, as required.
The general surgery on-call involves initial assessment, operating and ward care of predominantly Upper GI surgical emergencies, on a 1:17 rota. This rota includes weekends on-site and out of hours cover (non-resident after 10 pm). There will be time available for outpatient clinics and elective inpatient and day case surgery based at the Royal Infirmary of Edinburgh with outreach elective sessions at St John’s Hospital, Livingston. The successful applicant will work as part of a team providing general surgical services that includes treatment of benign Upper GI disease and complex hernias, both laparoscopic and open, but which excludes bariatric surgery and oesophagogastric resections. It is expected that the successful applicant would have advanced laparoscopic skills. An ongoing interest in both undergraduate and postgraduate teaching and training will be required along with a commitment to clinical research and audit.
