The Green Howards Museum is based in the centre of Richmond, North Yorkshire. It tells the amazing personal stories of the soldiers who served with the Green Howards regiment, which was formed in 1688, and houses the regiment’s collection of rare uniforms, medals, kit equipment, art, and silver. Set over 3 floors, the museum was completely refurbished in 2014.
We are seeking a knowledgeable and experienced Commercial Manager to oversee and drive the museum's commercial operations. This role is essential to enhancing revenue streams and supporting the museum's sustainability and growth.
As the Commercial Manager, you will lead the retail, events, sponsorship, and venue hire aspects of the museum, optimizing profitability while maintaining our mission of historical preservation and education.

The role includes:
BUSINESS DEVELOPMENT
1. Identifying business growth opportunities
2. Working on business development activities, evaluating risks and opportunities of potential projects alongside the Chief Executive, and developing new income streams
3. Developing our corporate sponsorship offerings
4. Promoting commercial hire of the museum and managing commercial bookings
5. Monitoring performance of commercial activities using key metrics
RETAIL
1. Creating and delivering a retail strategy in order to maximise the museum shop’s sales and profitability
2. Creating sales reports, analysing sales and stock data, ordering new products and managing stock levels
3. Leading the retail team to achieve agreed objectives and maintain the high levels of customer service
4. Managing and developing the online shop
5. Ensuring accurate record keeping for Gift Aid tax reclaim purposes
6. Overseeing all financial aspects of the shop
EVENTS
1. To develop and evaluate an annual events plan and strategy; and create a program of events to promote the museum
2. Organise all group bookings to the museum
3. Liaise with partners and other external organisations to enlarge our events offering.
4. Producing action plans for events; coordinating the days, and evaluating all bookings and events
5. Volunteer recruitment and training for events when necessary.
6. Working alongside the Marketing and Communications Manager to promote both the retail and income generating offerings
7. Managing the commercial budgets for the shop and the events
8. Report to Trustees and Museum Executive Committee on a ¼ basis.
The successful applicant will be able to demonstrate:
1. Proven experience in a commercial or retail management role, ideally within a heritage, museum, or cultural sector
2. Strong business acumen, with experience in budget management, financial reporting, and sales analysis
3. Excellent organisational and communication skills
4. High levels of initiative, enthusiasm, and motivation
5. Ability to multitask, problem-solve, and to deal with the unexpected
6. A proven track record of driving sales
7. Experience in business development
