Ambulatory Care Nurse Haematology Oncology

This is an exciting opportunity for an experienced band 5 to join a 12 month pilot project to deliver care closer to home for patients undergoing treatment for haematology/oncology conditions.
The post holder will carry responsibility and accountability for the health care management of their patient group, in collaboration with senior nurses and Team Leaders. The band 5 nurse will be responsible for assessing, developing, implementing and evaluating family centred programmes of care in line with the project.
Main Duties of the Job
The successful candidate will be part of a team delivering care closer to home for haematology/oncology patients. This will include chemotherapy and supportive care treatments.
You must be able to work well as part of a team or alone using initiative whilst also recognising limitations.
Excellent communication skills with service users and other service providers is essential to co-ordinate effective care delivery.
Job Responsibilities
Clinical Responsibilities
1. Maintain high standards of nursing care and promote an environment suitable for the care of children, ensuring that all planned care reflects the latest research developments.
2. To assess, develop, implement and evaluate family centred programmes of care in partnership with colleagues or senior staff and ultimately without direct supervision.
3. Actively participate in mentorship for junior staff and students and participate in clinical supervision.
4. Ensure child protection issues are acted upon promptly and appropriately.
5. Continuously develop the clinical role in order to work independently, anticipate care needs of patients and actively manage their journey through the Trust.
6. To extend and expand nursing roles within the nurse's competence, and with appropriate training as guided by local and departmental policies and procedures.
Management Responsibilities
1. Aim to promote high morale within the nursing team by good staff relationships and clear lines of communication.
2. Monitor effective use of resources, in collaboration with colleagues.
3. Maintain a safe working environment.
4. Organise and manage effectively designated area in liaison with Band 6 ambulatory care nurse.
5. Maintain accurate and contemporaneous patient records in accordance with the NMC and Trust guidelines.
6. Record and report accidents/incidents to patients or staff in accordance with Trust guidelines and policy.
Communication Responsibilities
1. To promote an effective communication system, both written and verbal, ensuring that a team approach to family centred care is encouraged and adopted.
2. Enter appropriate data into the EPR (Meditech expanse) in a timely manner and ensure all nurse-led screens are completed.
3. Participate in relevant departmental meetings and represent the department at Trust-wide meetings when appropriate, disseminating information as needed.
4. Act in a way to promote confidentiality, dignity, and trust of patients, parents, carers, and other staff members.
5. To ensure accurate and confidential documentation is maintained in accordance with the NMC, Trust, and departmental guidelines.
Training/Education/Research Responsibilities
1. To support the induction of new members of staff with a period of preceptorship and to participate in the mentorship of students and to supervise and teach others.
2. Update personal knowledge and skills by attending and participating in study days, conferences, and in-service training, including mandatory training sessions to comply with Trust and departmental requirements.
3. Participate in clinical supervision.
4. Identify areas for research and contribute and participate in nursing and medical research programmes.
5. Disseminate information gained from research.
6. Participate in quality monitoring in conjunction with Trust's Clinical audit and departmental audits.
Other Duties Responsibilities
1. Undertake any other duties as appropriate to the grade as delegated by the Senior Nurse.
2. Comply with all Trust Policies including the Promotion of Health and Safety in the workplace.
3. All individuals will have some risk management responsibilities with which you are required to comply.
Person Specification
Education and Training
* RN Child
* 1-2 years haematology/oncology experience post registration
* SACT and IV therapy competent
Experience
* Teaching and mentoring in the clinical area in accordance with NMC Council Standards to support learning and assessment in practice (NMC 2008)
Knowledge
* Planning, implementing and assessing family centred care in a child-friendly environment
* Awareness and understanding of confidentiality and accountability.
* Knowledge of relevant local and national guidelines
Skills
* Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal
* Excellent interpersonal skills, especially in difficult and stressful situations
* Ability to work well as part of a team or alone using initiative whilst aware of own limitations
