Walsall Healthcare NHS Trust provides integrated acute and community healthcare in the West Midlands serving a population of 260,000 residents. Walsall Manor Hospital houses the full range of district general hospital services. The £170 million development was completed in 2010 and we are continually upgrading. Job overview
You will possess good communication skills, work well as part of a team and have the ability to work in an extremely busy and challenging environment. We are committed to providing a high standard of care to our patients using a multidisciplinary approach. You will provide sterile medical devices/Endoscopes to theatres, wards, departments and community services. You may need to communicate with not only colleagues but also our internal and external customers.
Main duties of the job
1. To undertake decontamination science duties in providing a specialised decontamination of medical devices service contributing to the clinical care of the patient – to carry out the receipt, disassembly, cleaning, reassembly, packing and sterilisation of reusable medical devices and record all tasks in the tracking and traceability database including cleaning, washing, reassembly of Endoscopes.
2. To ensure that all products manufactured in the department within the Trust are fit for purpose and produced in a timely and efficient manner in accordance with the Quality Management System (QMS) relevant to the area and to work as part of a team and undertake duties as directed by the management team of the Trust’s decontamination facility.
3. Inspection of medical devices and other associated equipment for cleanliness, functionality, completeness, assembly, and identification against tray specification lists.
4. To use manual dexterity and concentration for the disassembly and reassembly of the reusable medical devices & endoscopes in accordance with Manufacturers instructions.
5. Wrapping of instrumentation sets and other surgical equipment in accordance with HTM guidelines and HSDU policies and procedures.
6. To undertake initial investigation into non-conformance reports as instructed.
7. Loading and unloading of trolleys of instrumentation sets and other surgical equipment into washer/disinfectors and sterilizers.
Working for our organisation
We are looking for an individual who is fully committed to providing a very high standard of work to support the needs of the Trust and to meet the high standards required to provide a safe environment for the care of our patients 365 days per year which includes weekends and Bank Holidays. HSDU Assistants are responsible for providing and maintaining a high standard of Sterile Medical Devices/Endoscopes to Theatres, Wards, Departments and Community Services.
Detailed job description and main responsibilities
1. Authorise release of sterile equipment after autoclaving following HSDU policies and procedures.
2. Transportation around the HSDU of both sterile and non-sterile equipment which includes manual handling of theatre instrument trays and other equipment between processes.
3. Collection and delivery of sterile and used equipment to wards, departments and clinics around the main hospital site.
4. Carry out duties in the sterile store including checking of sterile packs/trays after sterilisation, preparing items for distribution.
5. To replenish stock in the sterile store and make sure stock is rotated and report any raw materials shortage.
6. To record all equipment that comes into the department and at all stages of the flow through the department as HTM guidelines state using the departments tracking and traceability system.
7. To liaise with supervisors and managers to assess information and performance monitoring requirements.
8. To liaise with customers by telephone or face to face if delivering/collecting from wards, departments, and clinics and to communicate information within areas of specialisation and to FastTrack pack/trays when necessary.
9. To complete any training that is necessary for your role which includes any changes to the national guidelines.
10. To maintain compliance to all statutory and mandatory training as defined by the organisation and service needs.
11. May be required to work weekends and bank holidays.
12. To actively participate in the organisation’s appraisal system and personal development planning process in accordance.
Person specification
Qualifications
* Educated to NVQ level 3 in relevant discipline or equivalent level of knowledge.
* GCSE Maths grade C or above.
* GCSE English Language grade D or above.
Experience
* Have a minimum 12 months experience working in a sterile services carrying out a wide range of day to day duties in a busy department.
* To be able to work within a team.
Skills and knowledge
* Experience of demonstrating excellent attention to detail and accuracy.
* Have good communication/inter-personal skills.
Other
* Ability to work effectively as part of a team, demonstrating a collaborative approach and contributing positively to ideas.
* Ability to build and maintain effective working relationships.
