Job Description:
The Senior Aerothermal Engineer is responsible for driving continuous improvements of our cooling system design and the tools we use for its analysis, using information from our state-of-the-art simulations, CFD department, Wind Tunnel, and Testing Facilities.
Role Overview:
We are seeking a Senior Aerothermal Engineer to join our Aerodynamics Department and play a pivotal role in advancing our thermal and cooling systems—a key performance differentiator in Formula 1. Using cutting-edge simulation tools, CFD analysis, and wind tunnel testing, you will develop innovative solutions to optimise the cooling system’s architecture and improve the overall aerodynamic performance of our vehicles.
This is an exciting opportunity to directly influence the success of our cars on the track and to contribute to innovation at the highest level of motorsport.
Key Responsibilities:
1. Drive cooling system development by:
2. Automating system architecture optimisation for various power-unit cooling circuits.
3. Creating new innovative cooling system layouts to better maximise car performance.
4. Using CFD to optimise ducting in collaboration with the external aero team, minimising the aerodynamic impact of cooling airflows.
5. Conducting component-level CFD cooling simulations.
6. Validating and correlating testing data from rigs, pre-season tests, and on-track performance to refine simulation accuracy.
7. Continuously improving methodologies and processes within the cooling team.
8. Collaborate with the CFD department to enhance model accuracy and capability.
9. Work closely with Aero Development teams to maximise overall car performance.
10. Partner with Vehicle Performance and Vehicle Dynamics teams to develop and correlate models.
11. Manage end-to-end Aerothermal projects, including data analysis and reporting.
Core Skills and Experience:
1. Comprehensive understanding of heat transfer and fluid mechanics principles.
2. Familiarity with standard IT packages (e.g., Microsoft Office).
3. Experience with OpenFOAM and StarCCM+ for thermal simulation setup (preferred).
4. Proficiency in CAD surfacing (preferably NX).
5. Programming experience is desirable, but a willingness to learn is equally valuable.
6. Strong project management skills with the ability to handle complex tasks effectively.
7. Excellent communication and collaboration skills, with the ability to work across multidisciplinary teams.
8. Analytical thinking and decisive problem-solving abilities.
