Help children to learn as effectively and independently as possible
both in group situations and on their own by promoting
independence and independent learning skills
● Develop an understanding of children’s individual learning needs
and ensure their access to the lesson and its content through
appropriate clarification, explanations, equipment and materials
● Provide support/supervision by working one to one with children on
an individual programme under the direction of the teacher
● Ensure children have access to the curriculum by supporting them
where necessary
● Motivate and encourage children and help them develop their
self-esteem and confidence
● Assist teaching staff in the curriculum planning for the individual
child and in the preparation and supervision of classroom activities
● Contribute to the planning and evaluation of lessons in the context
of children’s progress against specific objectives and/or targets
● Maintain records and monitor the progress of children including
feeding back this information to the class teacher
● Assist in the production of learning/teaching resources, including
differentiated materials
● Prepare classrooms and activity areas, e.g., mounting displays,
cleaning and tidying up
● Set up equipment and carry out appropriate checks to ensure that
the equipment is safely assembled
● Accompany classes and supervise children on outings and other
educational visits
● Attend and contribute to meetings/INSET within the school, e.g.,
staff meetings
● Review your own performance and take part in professional
development opportunities
● Collaborate and cooperate with other professionals within the
school and maintain confidentiality at all times
