Position: Teaching Assistant
Contract type: Temp/Contract
School: Community primary school
Area: Peacehaven, near Brighton, East Sussex
Sussex Teachers are working with a large primary school near Brighton, East Sussex, to find a SEND Teaching Assistant to join their specialist Autism Spectrum Condition (ASC) Unit. Starting as soon as possible, this long-term supply position will continue for at least 6 weeks.
About the School
This is a large, two-form entry community primary school in Peacehaven, East Sussex. It’s the kind of place where children are eager to learn, proud of their school, and love their community. Ofsted recently rated them as ‘Good’ and highlighted their outstanding behaviour and personal development support. There’s plenty of outdoor space—including large playgrounds and a Forest School—and an experienced, supportive team of teachers, SENCOs, and leadership staff.
It’s also easy to reach, with regular public transport links from Brighton and a large staff car park if you drive.
The Job
Supporting children with Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND) is one of the most fulfilling roles in education. Every small breakthrough—whether it’s a new word, a social interaction, or a moment of independence—can feel like a huge achievement. The impact you make can change the course of a child’s life, helping them build confidence, develop essential skills, and find their place in the world. And in the right school, with the right team, you’ll have everything you need to help children reach their full potential.
You’ll be working with a small group of Key Stage 1 (KS1) pupils, all of whom have Education, Health and Care Plans (EHCPs). That means personalised learning, tailored strategies, and a focus on developing communication, social skills, and independence. The children are part of the mainstream school too, so alongside the unit, you’ll support their integration into their class groups.
Key Responsibilities
* Providing 1:1 and small group support for up to 8 KS1 pupils in the specialist ASC unit, helping them access learning in a way that works for them.
* Managing behaviour, supporting communication, and developing social skills.
* Collaborating with teachers, the SENCO, and the leadership team to adapt learning plans and resources to suit each child’s needs.
* Encouraging integration with the mainstream school, supporting children as they join their class groups with additional help when needed.
What You’ll Need
* Experience working with children with SEND, autism (ASD), and complex needs in a classroom setting.
* Strong behaviour management skills, particularly supporting children with ASD and associated challenges.
* The ability to adapt and problem-solve—because no two days are the same.
* A genuine passion for inclusive education and supporting children’s learning and development.
Benefits of This Role
* High staff: pupil ratio ensuring that every child has the support required for them to reach their full potential.
* Make a lasting impact on children’s confidence, independence, and future learning.
* Gain valuable experience in autism support, communication strategies, and behaviour management.
* Work in a Specialist Unit, with a sensory room, kitchen, and open-plan classroom designed for SEND learning.
* Enjoy weekly Forest School sessions and specialist music and PE teaching.
* Work in a calm, purposeful school where pupils enjoy learning and feel valued.
* No Staff Meetings or Parents’ Evenings – focus entirely on supporting children without extra admin.
* Guidance from a specialist education consultant before, during, and after your placement.
