ABOUT US
The Unicorn Centre, a self-funded registered charity, is a purpose-built riding for the disabled facility offering riding therapy and training opportunities for adults and children from the Tees Valley area with special educational needs and disabilities.
Opened in 1998, the Centre is an established part of the local community and has a strong contingent of local volunteers who play an active and vital part in delivering our activities.
Around 100 riders receive lessons weekly at the Centre on our 12 horses and ponies. They come individually or from schools, adult training centres, and adult residential homes. We also offer therapy sessions for those not wishing to ride but have meaningful contact with horses either at the Centre or in the community.
We rely entirely on our activities, fundraising, grants and donations to raise monies to cover our annual £250,000 costs.
SUPPORTED VOLUNTEERS
Our multi-award winning Supported Volunteer programme provides participants with practical horsemanship skills, knowledge, and increased life skills while they are volunteering at the Centre. Supported by qualified Support Workers, the volunteers can work towards an accredited Asdan qualification.
Aims are set for communication, confidence, enjoyment, working with others, physical improvements, and of course horsemanship skills. They’re tailored to meet individual needs, reviewed regularly, and used as a stepping stone to further training, employment, or independent volunteering.
They are also offered educational visits out, riding lessons, cookery, art and sewing sessions as well as an outdoor classroom and raised beds enabling them to grow fruit and vegetables and then cook and eat them!
Our participants love being part of the SV Programme and play an active part in the life of the Centre including helping with fundraising events and Tea with a Pony. They work tirelessly on the yard helping out the staff and volunteer team and bring a smile to everyone’s faces.
The Unicorn Centre is committed to equality and fairness for all.

National Living Wage (£11.44 per hour, 24 hours per week) per annum pro rata.
