ROLE TITLE: Roadworker / General Operative
PURPOSE OF POST:
The role is to work within a professional highway maintenance team, ensuring that the highway network is safe and available 24/7 for the travelling public and business communities throughout South East Wales.
The successful applicant will undertake a range of general highway maintenance works, including drainage, potholing, fencing, grass cutting, and other similar highway works.
The Purpose of this Role:
1. Undertake, generally as part of a team, less complex general highway maintenance works including:
2. Potholing
3. Cleaning and litter picking
4. Work with bituminous materials
5. Grass cutting
6. Basic masonry and concrete/paving
7. Other similar associated highway work
8. Operate all small plant and tools required to undertake the above duties
9. Carry out basic setting out of work and work to precise levels
10. Work in a safe manner in accordance with H&S legislation and Council policy
11. Operate a wheeled loading shovel
12. Maintain basic work records, undertake basic health & safety assessments, and record information electronically if required
13. Undertake winter maintenance duties and participate in standby rota arrangements if required
14. Direct the work of other operatives
15. Undertake any other duties commensurate with the grade of the post
Expectation and Outcomes of this Role:
You will be expected to undertake highway maintenance operations, as instructed by your supervisor, within specified constraints, quickly and safely, ensuring the safety of the team and the travelling public at all times.
Your responsibilities are to:
1. Aid our highways operations team in achieving the required service levels specified within the MCC Service Improvement Plan
2. Be courteous to all members of the public and ensure that highway maintenance services are efficiently undertaken and of a high standard
3. Contact the supervisor if any work practice or equipment is considered unsafe
4. Provide observations to the supervisor that may help improve existing work practices

Person Specification
How will we know if you are the right person for the role? As the successful candidate, you will have demonstrated:
1. Ability to carry out heavy physical manual duties over prolonged periods
2. Ability to work as part of a team
3. Ability to work with minimal supervision
4. Ability to take instructions
5. Ability to operate construction plant, i.e., rollers, breakers, compactors, disc cutters, etc.
6. Willingness to undertake training to expand skills base and health & safety awareness
7. A minimum standard of literacy to maintain basic work records
8. Ability to deal with staff and the public courteously
9. Ability to use personal electronic communication equipment
10. Acceptance of legal responsibilities for health & safety, including the wearing of personal protective equipment when required
11. Preparedness to wear the section's designated uniform
