Head of Operations – Port of Tyne

Reporting to: Operations Director
Jackson Hogg is proud to be supporting the Port of Tyne in their search for a Head of Operations. This role offers an exciting opportunity to lead and develop a high-performing operations team, ensuring the efficient, safe, and cost-effective handling, storage, and transport of cargo and passengers.
Key Responsibilities:

Lead and develop a vision for cargo and passenger handling, storage, and transportation, ensuring high standards in operational efficiency, customer service, and health & safety.
*
Manage and oversee operational teams across Bulk Cargo, Transport, Cruise & Ferries, Warehousing, Containers, Resource Planning, and Training & Compliance.
*
Drive cultural and operational change to align with the Port’s strategic plan and objectives.
*
Develop and implement flexible working arrangements, ensuring employee performance and development align with business goals.
*
Manage recruitment, selection, absence management, and disciplinary procedures.
*
Maintain strong relationships with Trade Unions and Employee Representatives to enhance communication and engagement.
*
Continuously review and implement operational improvements, including technological solutions.
*
Manage budgets and forecasts, ensuring expenditure aligns with financial protocols.
*
Support business development by fostering strong relationships with existing and potential customers to maximise commercial opportunities.
*
Identify, manage, and mitigate business risks within areas of responsibility.
*
Ensure consistent application of Quality Management Systems.
Essential Experience & Skills:
*
Extensive people management experience with a proven ability to lead, develop, and motivate teams in an operational environment.
*
Strong track record in managing change and driving process improvements.
*
Proven experience in health & safety management, business & operational planning, environmental management, and project management.
*
High-level negotiation and influencing skills, with the ability to communicate effectively at all levels.
*
Strong financial management skills, including budget preparation and financial control.
*
Ability to build and maintain effective relationships both internally and externally.
*
Organisational skills with the ability to coordinate multiple tasks and meet deadlines.
Desirable Experience & Skills:

Experience managing operations within a port or similar logistics environment.
*
Background working within a unionised environment.
*
An appreciation of strategic business issues.
