Location: Winchester College, Winchester
Salary: £50,000 per annum dependent on experience
Role Overview
This strategic leadership role will require you to be responsible for overseeing the College’s health and safety arrangements, ensuring full compliance with relevant legislation and ISI regulations. You will play a critical role in shaping and implementing safety policies, conducting audits, managing training programs, and liaising with external agencies to ensure a safe campus environment. The position reports to the Estates Bursar and works alongside a part-time administrator.
Key Responsibilities
* Policy Development: Coordinate the implementation of safety policies, reviewing and updating to ensure compliance.
* Support & Auditing: Work closely with Heads of Department and external consultants to audit safety practices and ensure ongoing improvement.
* Training: Provide training on health and safety topics, ensuring all staff are informed and compliant with safety requirements.
* First Aid: Oversee first aid arrangements, including training and ensuring appropriate cover across the campus.
* School Trips & Events: Review risk assessments for school trips and events, advising on any necessary safety measures.
* Fire & Safety: Ensure fire risk assessments, evacuation plans, and fire warden coverage are regularly reviewed and maintained.
* Record Keeping: Maintain comprehensive and up-to-date safety records, including using the SMARTLOG platform for all health and safety documentation.
* RIDDOR Compliance: Ensure all serious accidents, incidents, and industrial diseases are reported in accordance with RIDDOR (Reporting Injuries, Diseases, and Dangerous Occurrences Regulations 2013). Lead investigations into such occurrences and take corrective actions as needed.
Person Specification
* Certified IOSH with at least 5 years’ experience in a health and safety management or leadership role.
* Experience delivering health and safety training and applying health and safety legislation to real-world scenarios.
* Ideally, you will have knowledge of compliance systems, experience in schools or construction, and familiarity with the NEBOSH Diploma or equivalent.
* Strong interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to work both independently and as part of a team.
* A proactive approach, with excellent analytical skills and a keen attention to detail.
* Commitment to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children.
