Consultant Geriatrician
Job overview
Due to exciting service developments, the service is looking to recruit a Consultant Geriatrician with opportunities for interest in Frailty, Movement Disorder, Dementia, Delirium and Community Geriatrics.
Wirral University Teaching Hospital is a large district general hospital serving a population of 400,000 on the Wirral peninsula. The area has a high proportion of older patients compared to the national average and has a significant care home population resulting in a high number of patients with frailty.
Patients are predominantly admitted to the unit from the Emergency Department (ED) with some patients from the Urgent Medical Assessment Centre (UMAC). Patients are assessed by a comprehensive Multi-Disciplinary Team on OPAU with a focus on a ‘Home First’ approach for patients.
This post will support our work at the front door with particular emphasis on a home first approach. However, as part of our wider plans to review the overall departmental structure the precise remit of the role may change over time.
Main duties of the job
1. The post-holder will work closely with the other Geriatricians to provide a comprehensive Service.
2. The post holder will work closely with the MDT to provide a comprehensive assessment of frail, older patients being admitted to WUTH working with a ‘Home First’ mentality.
3. The post holder will provide in-reach into ED when needed to assess frail older patients and to provide senior decision-making support to the Frailty at the Front Door team.
4. The post holder will provide cover for the out of hour’s DME on call rota, which attracts a 3% on call supplement.
