An opportunity is available for an Advisor – Environmental Management. This role will support the Environment Team in delivering a high standard of Environmental Management across National Grid Electricity Distribution (NGED) enabling delivery of legislative compliance and promoting continuous improvement to our environment. Underpinning our broader responsible business commitments you will help us maintain our high standards and leading performance in this space. You will support with implementing NGED environmental policy and strategy and the delivery of specific projects or strategies (e.g. Biodiversity Net Gain) that help deliver environmental compliance and continued improvement in environmental performance. The successful candidate will be a Subject Matter Expert (SME) and trusted advocate for environmental management across the business. You will offer full provision of environmental support to an allocated licence area, including incident management. We can offer flexibility on where the role is based (in one of our local depot offices) within our South West or South Wales licence areas. As part of our hybrid working approach this role offers a mix of office and home working. Evidence of your qualifications will be required prior to appointment. Depending on experience, you may initially be appointed at a lower salary until all relevant courses and training are complete. Main ResponsibilitiesManaging and enabling environmental compliance Help inform the setting of environmental policies and standards and the development of ED environment polices and standards ensuring overall legal compliance Support the business to develop appropriate strategies and plans to manage strategic risks and opportunities across NGED, including within capital projects (i.e. Biodiversity Net Gain, Oil management) Undertake non-operational and operational site visits in allocated area to ensure ongoing compliance Deliver regular horizon scanning to ensure ED remains on the forefront of environmental trends, practice and industry issues Deliver campaigns promoting environmental awareness through appropriate communication methods Deliver training so that that employees across ED are trained to an appropriate level of environmental competency in accordance with their roles and potential impact Support environmental incident investigation and learning Contract management e.g. waste contract / ecologist / contaminated land Reporting/governance/disclosures Collate Environmental information for the NGED business and use this to report on the business's environmental performance Delivery of BU reporting e.g. ESOS / annual compliance reporting /packaging regs/SECR. Advocacy/engagement/influencing Engage with stakeholders, to ensure high standards of environmental management are maintained and policies are aligned with industry best practice Engage with broader network of environmental professionals and practitioners across the business and other companies to facilitate knowledge and good practice transfers Embedding and managing environmental performance across the business Work across NGED to produce, review and update Environmental Management Plans on a regular basis Pro-actively support and engage with the NGED business, particularly operational teams, to ensure compliance with our Environmental policies and standards through coaching, awareness campaigns, SME support. Support the NGED business to deliver strategies to achieve targets set for environmental performance The Ideal CandidateDo you have knowledge of environmental management and environmental legislation – our risks and obligations? We are looking for someone with a demonstrable understanding of the application of key legislation. You should also have commercial acumen, helping to ensure that all sustainability needs across NGED are justified by a strong business case. To apply you will need to hold a suitable academic qualification at Degree or Higher Diploma level, in a subject such as Environmental Management. Ideally you will also be a member of a professional body. You must be willing to travel to our sites across the UK as required and therefore a full UK driving licence is required.
