The role
As a Principal Marine Structures Engineer, you’ll have a role that’s out of the ordinary. You will join a national team of over engineers and designers within the Marine Sector of Babcock. We are a leading design consultancy providing naval architecture, marine system engineering, electrical engineering, design modelling and project support services to the marine and defence markets.
Day to day, you’ll be responsible for responsible for authoring, reviewing and substantiating Marine and Structural designs through calculations, simulations, commissioning and diagnostic test support. You will be required to contribute and lead product development throughout the design lifecycle and provide technical support to our key customers, ensuring efficient and effective delivery of engineering outputs. You will be required to act as Technical Authorities and have deep subject knowledge of an aspect of Marine/Mechanical engineering. They have technical responsibility for the delivery of engineering outputs, often with associated leadership responsibilities.
1. Primary deliverables are authoring and reviewing substantiation reports/designs for installation solutions.
2. Leading on the production of substantiation reports for design solutions throughout the entire design lifecycle phases (Concept, Basic, Functional, Detail, Manufacturing, Installation and Decommissioning), in line with recognised standards and to the required time, cost and quality requirements.
3. Lead design teams and other stakeholders throughout the design lifecycle to ensure coordination and functionality of design, including supporting design reviews, and act as Technical Authorities within their area of expertise.
4. Develop innovative design solutions with robust engineering substantiation.
5. Provide solutions to manufacturing and installation issues by assisting in the resolution of technical and production queries.
6. Produce, approve and authorise technical reports and other documentation.
This role is based on site in Devonport with hybrid working options.
Essential experience of the Principal Marine Structures Engineer:
7. High level of developed knowledge and experience, the role is directly accountable for design development, and determines solutions to problems and issues within their specialist subject area.
Qualifications for the Principal Marine Structures Engineer:
8. Ideally degree qualified but HND/HNC level qualification in an engineering discipline with extensive experience in relevant field will be considered.
9. A member of a relevant institution (e.g. RINA, IET, IMechE, IMarEst etc.) and hold Chartered status.
The successful candidate must be able to achieve SC security clearance for this role.
