Looking for something new & exciting in the NHS? Ever considered Prison healthcare?
An exciting opportunity has arisen for a Senior Primary Care Nurse to join the Offender Health Directorate working at HMP Fosse Way. HMP Fosse Way is a Category C Resettlement Prison.
HMP Fosse Way houses 1,715 prisoners and focuses on the rehabilitation of offenders and their reintegration back into society. It consists of 7 House blocks across 4 floors. There is a dedicated healthcare suite located in the main building, with additional multi-use rooms across the establishment, including rooms for groups or 1-2-1’s.
The Primary Healthcare Team provides a wide variety of care from initial assessment/screening for all new patients, clinical triage, emergency response, care of minor illness and injuries, nurse-led clinics for long-term conditions, and health promotion. We aim to provide healthcare to offenders that is equivalent to those in the community.
Nursing in a custodial environment provides the perfect opportunity to offer a positive nurse-led health experience to a group of patients who are usually identified as experiencing poor health outcomes.
Working as part of a fully integrated Healthcare Team, you will have the opportunity to make a real difference to our patients, who are often not in receipt of essential healthcare services in the community for a variety of reasons. While in our care, we are able to empower our patients to become more aware of their health needs, to be screened and receive vaccinations for a variety of conditions.
We support and develop our nursing team to lead on areas of specialty which are of interest to them and can offer additional training as required. We also offer a supportive preceptorship package for newly qualified nurses.
You will work closely with our Prison Officer colleagues to provide a high standard of safe and patient-centred healthcare services.
The Offender Health Care Group is one of the largest and most successful providers of prison healthcare in the UK, providing physical, mental health, and substance misuse healthcare services in prisons across the East Midlands, Lincolnshire & Leicestershire.
You will be responsible for the assessment, planning, implementation, and evaluation of healthcare for patients, including:
1. Safe administration of medications in accordance with National, Trust, and Local policies.
2. Providing a triage service and clinical interventions, recognising environmental limitations and the need for appropriate referral, assessment, and transfer of patients who require care within wider NHS provision.
3. Responding to healthcare emergencies within the prison in accordance with the Trust's and Local policies and procedures.
4. Maintaining accurate healthcare records and handling sensitive and confidential information appropriately.
5. Delivering evidence-based care and seeking specialist advice from other Healthcare professionals both internal and external.
6. Acting as a named nurse for patients with specialist or complex health needs.
7. Providing nurse-led clinics in the healthcare centre, on the prison wings, or other suitable settings.
8. Providing basic leadership to junior staff by maintaining professional standards, ensuring adherence to all relevant policies and procedures to ensure the delivery of high-quality care.
9. Identifying patients who could be at risk of self-harm and escalating appropriately while respecting patients' individuality and maintaining their privacy and dignity within the constraints of the custodial environment.
