Deputy Entertainment Editor Location: Metro Headquarters – London Position: 12 month FTC, maternity cover Job Introduction Metro.co.uk delivers news, features, sport, opinion, and shareable content to a fast-growing global audience and we are looking for a talented deputy entertainment editor to join the London team. Ideal candidates will have experience in creating original content in a variety of forms, including fast-paced breaking news, explainers, deep-dives, interviews, videos and features. They will cover a wide range of topics, with a focus on celebrity, TV, music, movies and social media. A strong track record of news gathering, subbing, editing, mentoring and leading a team is essential, together with an understanding of digital 24-hour news and the processes and pressures that come with operating in this environment, such as working with audience teams and boosting traffic. They will have a talent for finding the strongest angles on the best stories and be confident in pitching ideas to the entertainment editor as well as PRs. The ideal deputy editor should be passionate about online journalism and have an in-depth knowledge of the rapidly changing industry and be adaptable for the new challenges that often arise. They must also be confident among a strong team and keen to pursue original angles for stories – and nurture reporters to do so – while developing contacts and representing Metro.co.uk. Some writing and reporting will also be key, and they must have a distinctive, engaging and lively writing style, and the ability to cover breaking news, features, analysis pieces, explainers and more. We’re not afraid of character here. Outstanding candidates should also be able to balance editorial objectives in a fast-paced news environment. Prior experience in publishing in a newsroom is essential. This will be a Sunday-Thursday role. Responsibilities: Assisting the entertainment editor and TV editor in running the entertainment desk and leading when they are absent, as well as leading shifts on Sundays, one of the most crucial days of the news week. Taking on a variety of responsibilities and tasks to aid the editors in the overall running of our content output, including forward planning and attending planning meetings to ensure we have a strong strategy and coverage, particularly across nights and weekends. Working with the entertainment and TV editors and the social, social video, SEO and picture desks to create bold, engaging and timely content. Liaising with the Metro newspaper team to make sure our content is maximised across both online and print. Writing – and overseeing – the best and most engaging entertainment content, using a variety of formats. Creating/commissioning original stories and bringing in exclusives as well as making sure trending stories are covered in an innovative and imaginative way. Key requirements: Must have extensive experience working full time for a digital media outlet in showbiz/entertainment/TV. Understanding of the UK Editors’ Code of Practice, media and copyright law. Adaptability, speed and wide-ranging skillset to cover breaking news, in-depth features and social-led content. Excellent attention to detail and organisational skills. Experience in conducting interviews across a variety of platforms, from written to TikTok. Must have excellent industry contacts and be confident to create exclusive content by utilising them.
