Lighting Designer, Retail Lighting Specialist

Hybrid working pattern where two set days per week (Mondays and Fridays) are available for home working, subject to occasional exceptions for in-person meetings and site visits. On Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays, it is mandatory to work from the office. Induction training taking place in the first few weeks of the role may require presence at the office on home working days.

Target application areas are working spaces, retail, hospitality, architecture, art and culture, residential and urban spaces collaborating on projects with top retail clients, lighting consultants, architects and engineers.
What we are looking for:
We are looking for a motivated and passionate designer who is detail oriented, can demonstrate a strong interest in lighting design, and is excited to be part of a dynamic design team. We are open to a range of backgrounds and experience, including electrical engineering, interior design, architecture and product design. We are ideally seeking a Designer with 5+ years of experience, however, we are also open to receiving applications from less experienced Junior Designers.
As a world leading manufacturer of architectural lighting, we provide technical and design services to support the specification and use of our products in the UK, as well as for international projects. If successful, you will be responsible for the design, review and delivery of lighting proposals. You will work to specified project deadlines and support the team of Sales Engineers during the sales process. In addition to the design responsibilities, you will also provide technical support to the clients network (lighting designers, architects, engineers, contractors and end users) and to the retail sales team.
Core responsibilities of the role include:
1. Providing technical support for products in response to enquiries from clients and sales engineers.
2. Reviewing design briefs for projects, either alone or together with senior designers and sales engineers.
3. Ensuring the accuracy of information needed to start the product selection and design process, and that project requirements have been agreed with the specifier/client.
4. Planning product selection and lighting approaches together with the Design Liaison Manager or other senior team members.
5. Reviewing characteristics, limitations, and applicability of luminaires suggested for projects.
6. Producing and issuing lighting calculations, AutoCAD lighting layout drawings, material lists, and other required design documentation as needed, in line with project briefs and timelines.
7. Providing energy consumptions, energy savings, and payback reports for proposed lighting schemes as needed.
8. When required, travelling to client locations to discuss new projects or present lighting proposals.
9. When required, travelling to project sites with sales engineers or senior designers to help with lighting commissioning.
10. When required, collaborating with Control System specialists or suppliers to develop a control system strategy for proposed lighting schemes.
11. Developing and maintaining client relationships.
12. Preparing technical and design reports for projects, describing the work completed.
13. Preparing quotations in line with proposed designs using the CRM system.
14. Preparing technical and design documentation for retail lighting tenders.
15. Keeping track of project hours through the CRM system.
16. Working in collaboration with the Special Products department and Purchasing team when third-party components are required to complete projects.
17. Collaborating with the customer services team and sales engineers for coordination of delivery and order reviews.
18. Managing your individual workload including a project list and associated deadlines.
19. It is expected that you will have daily communication with the Design Liaison Manager and senior members of the team, in order to review workloads and project lists, helping with the allocation of new projects.
20. If successful, the role will enable you to expand your professional horizons beyond the aesthetic aspects of lighting proposals, gaining experience in the technical details of proposed lighting fittings, energy payback, the formulation of budgets and project management.
Essential requirements:
1. Ability to read 2D architectural drawings (plans, elevations, sections).
2. Proficient with AutoCAD 2D and Dialux or Relux.
3. Good knowledge of the physics of light, lighting product design, LED technology and lighting control systems.
4. Familiarity with UK standards and regulations for lighting design.
5. Technical-minded approach and excellent attention to detail.
6. Good time management skills.
7. Ability to work under pressure and meet tight project deadlines.
8. Ability to self-manage tasks and work independently with minimum supervision.
9. Available to travel (mainly in the UK for training and project site visit).
Desirable skills:
1. Degree in a relevant subject.
2. 5+ years’ experience working in the lighting manufacturing or lighting design industry.
3. Background in electrical engineering.
4. Familiarity with lighting control standards such as DALI, 1-10V, DMX, Bluetooth.
5. Ability to read and sketch basic electrical wiring diagrams.
6. Familiarity with some of the following software: Excel, Revit, Dialux 14, Dialux Evo, Relux Desktop, Relux Pro, Lighting Reality, Google Sketch Up, Photoshop, Vectorworks, Illustrator, Indesign, 3DS Max.
7. Knowledge of another second language.
8. Driving licence.
9. Full rights to work in the UK without company sponsorship.
