Job Summary
Applications are invited for a senior Biomedical Scientist and Team Leader within Histology. The successful applicant will lead the main laboratory area which consists of automated and manual microtomy, embedding, digital pathology and training. The role also involves staff management and assisting with procurement for the department.
Key Responsibilities
1. Facilitate the provision of the clinical technical services of the histology laboratory by supervising and instructing staff and maintaining resources.
2. Communicate to the Laboratory Manager such information as is required to maintain the continuing provision of the services.
3. Assist the Laboratory Manager with personnel or personnel related problems.
4. Deputise for the Laboratory Manager in their absence.
5. Undertake training of scientific and support staff.
6. Maintain adequate consumable and reagent stock levels.
7. Act as a training officer for the department.
8. Supervise staff, organise and prioritise workload to meet demanding deadlines.
9. Ensure compliance with Health and Safety protocols as set out in relevant documentation.
10. Assist in the validation and verification and production of Standard Operating Procedures for laboratory analyses.
11. Facilitate the keeping of adequate stocks of reagents and consumables.
12. Maintain maintenance contract for temperature monitoring system in the laboratory.
13. Undertake audits according to departmental schedule.
14. Co-ordinate all aspects of NEQAS registration and EQA submissions.
15. Audit Histology error logs to identify and resolve problem areas.
16. Gather, analyse and troubleshoot monthly operational statistics for the Directorate Manager.
17. Arrange analyser service contracts for the laboratory as required.
18. Requisition repairs of laboratory or equipment by the hospital estates department.
19. Arrange annual maintenance contracts for laboratory equipment and consumables.
20. Perform appraisals.
