Job overview
We have an exciting opportunity for a newly qualified dietitian, or existing band 5 dietitian, who is seeking further experience working in a large teaching hospital. We are looking for an enthusiastic, hardworking team player to join our friendly and dynamic band 5 team, where you will have the opportunity to work with GI, general medicine and community teams.
The Band 5 team has structured six monthly rotations where they can develop skills and experience across a wide range of clinical areas including elderly care, orthopaedics, surgery, gastroenterology, acute care, general medicine, cardiovascular and community. The rotations cover a mixture of inpatient areas, outpatient clinics, integrated community services, delivering talks to patients, staff and students in a supportive environment on which to build your dietetic career.

Main duties of the job
To work as part of the Band 5 Dietetic Team responsible for providing individualised dietetic advice to inpatients, outpatients, staff and carers across St Thomas’ Hospital and local communities of Lambeth and Southwark. The post may involve delivering group education sessions across acute and community settings.

We offer a well evaluated CPD programme with supervision from senior dietitians across a range of specialties including oncology, renal, gastroenterology, stroke, diabetes, HIV and paediatrics, and protected time for professional development. You will be provided with regular clinical supervision and regular 1:1s for support, empowering you to deliver high quality, safe and compassionate care.
You will be joining a team of over 100 dietitians and the department has excellent administrative support from our administration team, and clinical support from dietetic assistants. The department aims to provide a high quality service through evidence based practice and listening to acting on staff and patient feedback.
You must have or be in the process of applying for HCPC registration at the time of your application in order to be considered for interview. Successful applicants may be added to the reserve list following interview but will be required to provide evidence of HCPC registration and when provided, will then be considered for future roles.
Detailed job description and main responsibilities
Clinical responsibilities
* The provision of a comprehensive and effective dietetic service, providing nutritional counselling to patients on designated acute wards and community sites, in conjunction with the supervising clinical specialist.
* To provide expert advice to patients, carers and clinicians regarding provision of nutritional support for patients based on clinical evidence.
* To provide nutritional counselling to patients and carers in the outpatient setting on appropriate dietary treatment and management.
* Ability to develop and use communication and teaching skills to educate the diverse and multicultural population both on a one to one and in groups.
* To directly prescribe nutritional supplements, vitamins and mineral supplements as agreed with the medical team.
* To communicate and liaise with the community multidisciplinary team regarding nutritional management of patients.
* To advise and liaise with catering staff concerning the special dietary requirements of inpatients.
* To provide nutrition teaching sessions to other members of the multi disciplinary team.
* To be responsible for the discharge planning of patients going home on artificial nutritional support.
* To work as a team to prioritise a large caseload.
Professional Responsibilities
* To participate fully in the appraisal process and develop a strategy for continuing professional development.
* To be an active team member of the dietetic department at Guy’s and St Thomas’ participating in departmental developments and projects.
* To carry out administrative duties in line with local standards and policies.
Education & Training
* To undertake appropriate training and then participate and supervise the clinical training of Dietetic students.
* To participate in the development and delivery of training to any appropriate staff group.
* To undertake training to be deemed competent in the use of all equipment related to nutritional assessment.
* To be competent in the use of information technology with particular reference to nutritional packages for assessment of patients nutritional requirements.
* To undertake training to be deemed competent in the use of enteral feeding pumps and equipment.
* To give talks/lectures to interested groups.
Research/Audit
* To undertake supervised research or audit, where appropriate.
* To undertake such other duties as shall be indicated by the Clinical Dietetic Services Manager.

Qualifications
* Degree in Nutrition & Dietetics or equivalent
