Musculoskeletal - Advanced Physiotherapy Practitioner
Hertfordshire Musculoskeletal Service is currently looking for a Musculoskeletal Advanced Physiotherapy Practitioner to join our community team. This is an exciting opportunity to utilise your advanced musculoskeletal practitioner expertise and further develop clinical and leadership skills as part of an experienced out-patient integrated service. We have a commitment to clinical quality and ensure regular supervision and CPD opportunities. You will be working within the MSK Clinical, Assessment and Treatment Service (MSKCATS) which forms part of the integrated community MSK Services in the trust working alongside MSK Physiotherapy, the ACTIVATE for CFS and Persistent Pain team, and the Hand Therapy team. The successful applicant will have excellent communication skills, take a lead role in clinical delivery, and provide a key focus for MSK clinical expertise.
Main duties of the job
* The APP is the primary decision maker in the triage of Orthopaedic, Pain, and Rheumatology referrals from GPs and Allied Health Professionals, which would traditionally be seen by a consultant. This includes referring patients with serious pathology and immediate surgical/medical needs directly into secondary care.
* To undertake a highly specialised comprehensive assessment of patients including those with complex and diverse conditions.
* To demonstrate highly developed dexterity, coordination, and palpatory skills for assessment and manual treatment of patients.
* To use highly developed clinical reasoning and evidence-based knowledge to draw up an appropriate management plan with the patient. To implement specialist treatment either within the MSK multidisciplinary service or referral on to other services.
* To initiate and interpret specialist investigations (such as X-ray, ultrasound, MRI) to assist in the formation of a diagnosis and treatment plan.
* To prescribe and administer injections (such as cortico-steroid injections and local anaesthetics) for treatment and diagnostic purposes.

Job responsibilities
* The Hertfordshire Community NHS Trust MSK Clinical Assessment and Treatment Service (MSKCATS) is a community team, which manages Orthopaedic, Pain, and Rheumatology referrals from GPs in East & North Hertfordshire localities. The APP is the first point of contact.
* APPs are experts within their field whose role it is to triage, assess/diagnose, and treat patients with highly complex multi-pathologies who would normally have been seen in a consultant outpatient clinic. The management of such patients requires advanced clinical reasoning skills and the resolution of conflicting views.
* The APP triages patients into primary and secondary care services; discharging and prioritising patients, including those with serious pathology.
* The APP is a musculoskeletal expert resource for the Hertfordshire Community NHS Trust Musculoskeletal Service providing the highest level of expertise on MSK conditions and advice to other services and professions including GPs and hospital medical staff.
Person Specification
Qualifications and Experience
* HCPC Registration.
* Degree in Physiotherapy or equivalent.
* Specialist post-graduate qualifications relevant to the role.
* Masters degree or equivalent clinical practice experience or willingness to undertake.
* Minimum of 5 years post-registration experience in a specialist musculoskeletal role.
* Participation in service development including audit.
* Evidence of CPD activity especially in area of specialism.
* Experience in staff management.
* Experience in research/audit.
* Excellent communication skills.
* Excellent organisation abilities and able to work autonomously.
* Ability to seek out own clinical supervision and development needs.
* Ability to provide supervision, training, and support to colleagues and members of the healthcare team.
* Ability to understand psychology of a wide range of patients in order to help cope with anxiety they may have regarding treatment.
