Brighton College is seeking to appoint a Teacher of Drama to start in September 2025.
The Department
The department consists of three full-time members of teaching staff, a Drama PGAT, Director in Residence, two LAMDA teachers, and a Performing Arts team who manage all costumes, set, props, and technical support.
The Drama department is based in the extraordinary new Performing Arts Centre in the heart of the College, opened in 2024. This wonderful facility consists of a state-of-the-art theatre, drama studio and dance studio, together with multiple music, drama and dance teaching and rehearsal spaces.
We are delighted that curriculum drama is taught throughout Years 7, 8 and 9, in classes which range in size from approximately 16 to 24. In addition, there are currently 80 pupils studying the subject at GCSE, and 20 for A-Level, both following the Eduqas syllabus. The results in recent years have been excellent; for example, last year, achieving 95% 9-7 at GCSE and 75% A* at A-Level.
Teaching will take place in a studio space close to the main campus, as well in new Performing Arts Centre situated in the centre of the main College site. The wonderful new facility consists of a state-of-the-art theatre, drama studio and dance studio, along with other music, drama and dance teaching and rehearsal spaces.
The department produces an exciting array of productions each year: the Senior Production, Lower Sixth Production, Middle School Production, Year 9 Production, Year 8 Production, Year 7 Production. Rehearsals usually take place over an 8-12 week cycle, on Tuesday, Thursdays and Fridays after school, as well as some weekends.
There are also a plethora of drama activities on offer, such as improvisation clubs, a young writers club, scholars workshops, theatre design clubs, and drama outreach with local schools run by the senior pupils. We also run multiple theatre trips and digital theatre screenings. This cocurricular programme is augmented by events such as the Young Playwrights’ Showcase, House Film, and the House Duologue Competition.
Role Specification
The successful candidate will be an integral member of the department, teaching across year-groups, and having significant input into practical drama. They will be expected to direct a production each year, and help to run drama activities which form a central part of the College’s co-curricular provision. These clubs and societies would typically be oriented towards the interests of the successful candidate.
Additionally, all teachers at Brighton College are expected to contribute to the school’s pastoral system, generally as a tutor in one of our 15 houses (of which six are boarding houses and nine are day). There is also an expectation that all teachers will contribute to the co-curricular life of the school, through the extensive Games programme, and/or through the leadership of one of almost 100 school societies.
Candidates are encouraged to point to interests and enthusiasms as part of their application. All staff have the opportunity to contribute to our super-curricular Masterclass programme; this is a series of sessions focusing on an area of personal academic or cultural interest. These have included subjects such as Magical Realism, Cuisine and Culture and Great Debates in History.
All teachers joining Brighton will have the benefit of guidance by an experienced mentor, whose role it will be to provide support during their probationary period. Thereafter, all teachers are expected and supported to participate in continuous professional development, throughout their time at the College.
