Head of BMS Projects

Mitie Smart Workplaces is a business within Mitie Projects that provides customers with Workplace Consultancy services to implement solutions such as BMS upgrades, IoT/sensor tech, and design and fit-out services using 3D design.

Mitie's Building Management Systems (BMS) operation is a leading supplier of BMS services throughout the UK. Over the last twenty years, partner relationships have been established with leading BMS manufacturers, including Trend, Honeywell, Tridium, Distech, Priva, and Siemens.
We currently have an exciting opportunity for a highly competent and experienced executive to lead our BMS Projects division. In this role, you will be responsible for the overall strategy of the BMS Projects business, developing, delivering, and exceeding the annual business plan and agreed budget (£7m) plus delivering to increased year on year growth targets, owning the P&L, and taking the necessary actions to achieve the agreed growth plans.
The projects team consists of c.25 technical and support colleagues located throughout the UK. You will be required to lead this team, helping to motivate and develop them as needed to realise their full potential.
The role sits within the Smart Workplaces Business Unit on the SLT, under Mitie Projects, reporting directly to the Head of BMS which has a wider operational remit for BMS Planned and Reactive Maintenance.
The role will be expected to obtain security clearances post-employment specific to client needs.
Job Overview
We are currently seeking an experienced and passionate BMS and Project professional to head, lead, and manage our growing BMS Project Management Office. In this role, you will be responsible for overseeing all aspects of BMS project delivery including design, programming, commissioning, handover, and commercials. You will also be responsible for overall strategy development, team leadership, and ensuring successful completion of all BMS projects on time and within budget.
Key Responsibilities
1. Working with sales leads to develop and implement a plan for the growth and development of the BMS projects department, in line with company objectives.
2. Lead and manage a team of BMS Project Managers, accountable for the successful delivery of BMS projects.
3. Ensure efficient and effective programme management with individual governance for project specification and costing, planning, execution, monitoring, and reporting to meet project objectives and customer requirements.
4. Maintain strong relationships with key clients, contractors, suppliers, and other external stakeholders, ensuring their satisfaction with project delivery. Responsible for holding relationships with key BMS manufacturers.
5. Manage and participate in the selection, tendering, and development of new innovations for the BMS department to support market trends and customer needs.
6. Collaborate with other departments within the company, including Central Projects, Health, Safety, Environment, Operations, Sales and Marketing, Commercial and Finance, to ensure seamless project delivery.
7. Ensure that all BMS projects are compliant with relevant industry regulations and standards, as well as health and safety policies and procedures.
8. Develop and maintain a culture of continuous improvement within the department, promoting innovation and best practice to deliver optimal results.
9. Continuously assess and manage risks associated with BMS projects, implementing effective contingency plans where necessary.
10. Manage the department's financial performance, including the tracking of project budgets, revenue forecasting, and cost control.
11. Expectation that you may have to act as Project Manager on some key projects to help manage peaks and troughs of work.
Education, Experience, Skills And Attributes
1. Experience in the BMS industry.
2. Track record of successfully delivering a portfolio of BMS projects of various sizes and complexity.
3. Extensive Project Management experience; formal qualifications would be an advantage.
4. Demonstrated experience in leading and managing teams.
5. Broad understanding of BMS programming languages and platforms, such as Niagara, Trend, Siemens, or Honeywell.
6. Knowledge of HVAC systems, electrical systems, and energy-efficient technologies.
7. Relevant construction and health and safety qualifications such as SMSTS, CSCS Card, IOSH, NIBOSH etc.
8. Experience of working within the Construction Industry and standard forms of construction contracts.
