The Role:
As a Senior Theatre Practitioner and Surgical First Assistant (SFA), you will be a key player in ensuring high standards of care during a wide range of surgical procedures. You will bring extensive scrub experience across various specialities, including General Surgery, Orthopaedics, ENT, Plastics, Gynaecology, and Urology. You will also use your SFA qualification to assist surgeons during complex procedures, ensuring the highest quality of perioperative care.
Key Duties:
1. Prepare and maintain the sterile field to ensure all surgical procedures are conducted in a safe and controlled environment, adhering to aseptic techniques to minimise the risk of infection and ensure patient safety.
2. Assist in a wide range of surgical procedures across specialities including General Surgery, Orthopaedics, ENT, Plastics, Gynaecology, and Urology to deliver high-quality perioperative care and support positive patient outcomes.
3. Provide skilled assistance as a Surgical First Assistant (SFA) during procedures, ensuring the surgeon has the support needed to perform efficiently and effectively
4. Anticipate the needs of the surgical team during procedures to ensure a smooth workflow, preventing delays and enhancing the efficiency of the operating theatre.
5. Provide expert scrub assistance during complex surgeries to support the surgical team in achieving the best possible outcomes for patients through precise, well-coordinated interventions.
6. Document perioperative care and any interventions performed to ensure accurate and timely records that comply with clinical standards and contribute to ongoing patient care and legal requirements.
7. Collaborate with surgeons, anaesthetists, and fellow practitioners to promote a cooperative and communicative environment that ensures optimal patient care throughout the surgical procedure.
8. Maintain and manage surgical instruments and equipment to ensure that all necessary tools are available, functional, and properly cared for, enabling efficient and successful surgeries.
9. Ensure adherence to infection control and health and safety protocols to protect patients, staff, and visitors from harm, maintaining a safe and compliant working environment.
10. Support junior team members through guidance and knowledge sharing to cultivate a culture of continuous learning and ensure a high standard of care across the team.
What we are looking for:
Essential Requirements:
* Registered Nurse (NMC) or Operating Department Practitioner (HCPC) with valid registration.
* Surgical First Assistant (SFA) qualification and experience assisting surgeons during complex procedures
* Extensive experience as a Scrub Practitioner in a range of surgical specialities (General Surgery, Orthopaedics, ENT, Plastics, Gynaecology, and Urology).
* Proven leadership experience in an operating theatre, with excellent communication and mentoring skills.
* Strong knowledge of aseptic techniques and infection control practices.
Desirable Requirments:
* Surgical First Assistant (SFA) qualification.
* Post-graduate qualification in perioperative nursing or a related field.
* Experience in teaching and mentoring junior staff or students.
* Involvement in clinical audits and quality improvement initiatives.
