Main duties of the job
This role is a replacement role within the Oncology Department.
This is a full-time specialty doctor post in the Oncology Department at The Great Western Hospital. It is one of a team of specialty doctor posts supporting the Consultant teams in Medical and Clinical Oncology. The appointed candidate will join an existing team of 10 oncology medical staff including consultants, SAS doctors and specialist trainees. On joining the department, you will become part of a well-established, friendly team and will help us continue to drive forward improvements in the service that we provide to our patients.
The post holders work together to provide day to day cover and continuity for oncology patients attending the day ward, and the Radiotherapy Unit, supporting outpatient clinics and attending MDTs. All posts also have a commitment to cancer clinical trials, assessing patients' suitability to participate in appropriate clinical trials, consenting patients for clinical trial entry, reviewing patients enrolled in clinical trials and supporting the clinical trials team. The posts also contribute to the delivery of the Acute Oncology Service, reviewing known oncology patients admitted as an emergency and those patients admitted as an emergency who are subsequently found to have cancer of unknown primary. There is no overnight on-call commitment.
Job responsibilities
The specialty doctors will work together to cover the day ward and inpatient work, support outpatient clinics and attend MDTs.
This will include:
* The provision of medical support to the day therapy centre (chemotherapy day ward)
* Support to clinical teams in the management of oncology in-patients, together with ward rounds with the oncology consultants
* Oncology clinics
* Support radiotherapy patients attending the satellite centre
* Participation in MDT meetings
* Provision of clinical support to oncology clinical nurse specialists
* Audit and Clinical Governance

Qualifications
Essential
* Full registration with the General Medical Council
* MRCP or equivalent
Clinical Experience

* Wide experience in General Medicine and oncology
* Experience in research
* Good practical clinical skills
* Intermediate to advanced IT Skills Management Administration
