We are looking to appoint a dynamic and highly motivated consultant orthopaedic surgeon with a special interest in lower limb primary and revision arthroplasty and trauma surgery to work in our innovative and ambitious Trauma & Orthopaedic department. The successful candidate is expected to have substantial training in primary and revision arthroplasty surgery at fellowship level along with being on the specialist register. The successful candidate will join the Trauma on-call rota in our busy district general hospital.
Walsall Manor Hospital is going through an exciting phase of evolution, including greater academic and clinical collaboration with our neighbouring Royal Wolverhampton NHS Trust and University of Wolverhampton. £30 million in funding has been secured for a dedicated Black Country elective centre at the Cannock Hospital site which will substantially increase elective orthopaedic capacity and volume. Currently with three laminar flow theatres (two have been newly refurbished with state-of-the-art equipment), the trust has recently funded robotic surgery within the department. It has ambitions to become regional leaders at the forefront of clinical innovation and research.
Main duties of the job
The successful candidate will have a special interest in lower limb primary arthroplasty (including robotics) and revision hip surgery. Elective care currently takes place at Walsall Manor Hospital with future plans for elective services at a dedicated elective hub at Cannock Hospital. For trauma care, they will join an approximately one in 9 orthopaedic trauma rota based at the Walsall Manor Hospital. It is expected that the successful candidate will also have specialist interest and experience in complex lower limb trauma including management of periprosthetic fractures. Over the last three years, the department has seen significant activity and improvement in teaching innovation and research with involvement in multiple in-house and national multicentre studies. It has become one of the most popular departments for training placements amongst the trainees of the West Midlands School of surgery orthopaedics training program. It is hence expected that the successful candidate will keep pace with these standards and actively contribute to the departmental research and teaching activities within their role.
