Somerset FA is the not-for-profit body responsible for the development and governance of grassroots football in Somerset.
We're eager to strengthen our board with a Non-Executive Director in the following area:
Legal: Advising the company on legal matters and overseeing that the company is legally compliant.
As a Non-Executive Director, you will:
1. Help shape the vision, strategy, and future of football in Somerset.
2. Contribute to key decisions on policies, plans, and financial investments.
3. Ensure the game thrives in a way that is inclusive, diverse, and accessible to all.
Role Purpose
1. To offer advice to Somerset FA on legal matters covering the spectrum of its activities.
2. To ensure that Somerset FA remains compliant with its legal responsibilities.
3. Oversee and support the area connected with the post holder's skill and specialism, with specific responsibilities provided on appointment.
Responsibilities
1. To serve as a Director of the Association and to actively participate in its strategic management.
2. To execute the responsibilities of a Company Director in accordance with the Companies Act (2006) and other relevant legislation.
3. To safeguard the assets of the business along with the interests of the Membership and stakeholders of the Association.
4. Ongoing involvement in the planning and delivery of the SFA County Strategy & Business Plan.
5. To ensure the effective implementation of Board decisions by the Chief Executive and the staff, providing a supportive role in helping achieve the strategic aims and objectives of the Association.
6. To jointly oversee the management of risk to the Association.
7. To develop and maintain an effective corporate governance structure.
8. To monitor the financial affairs of the Association and ensure the effective use of SFA finances.
9. To promote equality of opportunity and a football for all ethos in a safe sporting environment.
10. To represent the Association to partners and stakeholders in a professional manner.
11. To act with discretion in respect of sensitive, confidential, or commercial information provided to you in this role.
Knowledge and Experience
1. A legal degree.
2. Experience of advising an SME on legal matters or work in the legal sector.
3. Understanding of the role of the Board of Directors and individual Directors of a ‘not for profit’ organisation.
4. Effective communication skills including verbal, written, and presentation skills.
5. Active listening skills.
6. Ability to write objective, factual reports and make recommendations based on the evaluation of evidence.
7. Able to develop effective relationships with people at all levels within Somerset FA and external to it, interacting at the appropriate level.
8. Negotiation skills (with staff and within a business context) including the ability to deal appropriately with conflict.
9. Experience of strategic planning and in delivering significant areas of a strategic plan.
10. Proven ability to solve problems and make decisions in a timely manner in line with the strategy of the organisation.
11. Proven leadership abilities.
12. Ability to decide priorities for Somerset FA and act accordingly.
13. Ability to cope with and manage change at pace appropriately.
14. Ability and willingness to accept responsibility.
15. Competent in the full range of IT particularly Microsoft Office.
16. Commitment to personal and professional development in self and staff.
17. A commitment to Equality in all areas.
18. Ability to give and receive evidenced feedback.
19. Understanding of and commitment to the highest levels of customer service balanced with the needs of the organisation.
20. A sound understanding of the volunteer/professional relationship and how this can be leveraged to support the work of the organisation.
Desirable:
1. Passion for football through football club playing, League committee management experience and/or supporting.
2. Experience of working at a senior role within an organisation, ideally proven experience as Director or similar role.
3. Demonstrating a working understanding and application of inclusion, equality, anti-discrimination, safeguarding, and best practice.
4. An understanding of Safeguarding of Children and Young People and Vulnerable Adults.
5. Performance evaluation of organisation and individuals within it.
