Research Fellow – Characterising and predicting compound flooding in the past, present and future for Viet Nam

Location: National Oceanography Centre Southampton
Salary: £30,395 per annum
Full Time – Fixed Term until 31/12/2021
Closing Date: Wednesday 06 March 2019

This post is being advertised as part of the CompFlood (Characterising and predicting compound flooding in the past, present and future for Viet Nam) project. Viet Nam is a rapidly developing country and, with 70% of its population living in coastal areas, it is highly exposed to flooding from coastal, fluvial and surface runoff sources. Densely populated communities in low-lying regions of the Mekong delta are especially vulnerable to flooding. This project brings together UK and Vietnamese expertise to map and characterise present and predict future flood risk, from coastal, fluvial, and surface sources and, uniquely, to assess the risk of compound (i.e. them in combination) flooding across the Mekong delta.
As a Research Fellow on this project, you will be responsible, supported by the other investigators on the project, for:
1. Running coupled hydraulic and hydrodynamic models to calculate the past and future likelihood of coastal and fluvial flooding across the delta, and by combining this with an assessment of surface flood potential, quantifying the occurrence of compound flooding events;
2. Estimating the area of land inundated, the numbers of people affected and what infrastructure and agriculture might be impacted for key hot spot areas, now and for future scenarios;
3. Working in close partnership with our national/provincial governmental project partners in Viet Nam, to consider management and planning options and provide guidance that will increase preparedness and resilience to future flood events.
The successful candidate will have quantitative statistical and numerical modelling skills to support the project team in this process. They are expected to have experience with Matlab, R or Python or other relevant programming languages, have a strong statistics background/experience, and have experience configuring and running numerical models. The post holder will also be expected to be an ambassador for the projects, including disseminating findings by taking the lead in preparing a journal publication, presenting results at conferences, participating in workshops or exhibiting work at other appropriate events, and providing material for the project website and the sponsors such as policy briefs. The candidate will attend two project workshops in Viet Nam.
The applicant should have a PhD or equivalent professional qualifications and experience in an ocean science discipline, statistics, maths, physics, engineering or a related field.
The post is fixed term (30 months) and the start date is 1 July 2018. There is some flexibility to start prior to this date.
The post will be responsible to the Project Leader, Associate Professor Ivan Haigh, and will be based at the National Oceanography Centre in Southampton. If you would like further information please contact Ivan Haigh (I.D.Haigh@soton.ac.uk; +44 (0) 2380 596501).
Application Procedure
You should submit your completed application form online at https://jobs.soton.ac.uk. The application deadline will be midnight on the closing date stated above. *Applications for Research Fellow positions will be considered from candidates who are working towards or nearing completion of a relevant PhD qualification. The title of Research Fellow will be applied upon successful completion of the PhD. Prior to the qualification being awarded the title of Senior Research Assistant will be given.
