Milestone Infrastructure is currently looking to recruit 2 Highway Inspectors to work on our Devon Highways contract in various locations across the county. As a Highway Inspector, you will be part of our Network Response Team who are responsible for highway inspections including safety defects, public reports, and reactive patching. Devon Highways is a 10-year Term Maintenance Contract that maintains the largest carriageway network in England. As the Highway Inspector, your duties & responsibilities will be:
1. Focus on achievement in delivering planned inspections in accordance with the Highway Inspection Programme; where opportunities exist, use available time to attend and triage public reported defects.
2. Report to the Highway Inspection Supervisors any potential delays to the completion of planned highway inspections.
3. Where network conditions are appropriate and safe, ensure repair areas/safety defects are marked or referenced using spray paint or chalk.
4. Meet reasonable productivity expectations as agreed by the Highway Inspection Supervisors.
5. Identify, inspect, and assess safety defects in accordance with the Highway Inspection Manual to determine if they meet the criteria for repair.
6. Accurately record defect information and apply the requirements of the risk matrix to establish the appropriate response priority.
7. Provide all necessary technical details to support the efficient first-time repair of safety defects.
8. Identify serviceability issues for locations where alternative treatments are considered a useful preventative treatment.
9. Provide accurate written supporting information relating to the defense of third-party accident claims, which may on occasion require the preparation of a formal statement and court attendance.
10. Identify and undertake repair of safety defects where the Highway Inspector has the equipment, knowledge, and competence to safely deliver repairs (e.g., overhanging vegetation, twisted sign plates, etc.).
11. Conduct the role in the knowledge that you are providing a public service and behave politely and professionally when addressing members of the public. Take care of your own health and safety and that of others affected by your work in accordance with the principles of the Milestone H&S Policy and processes.
12. You will be required to work outdoors in all weathers and be required to walk and stand on uneven ground.
13. Report any safety or environmental incidents and near-misses through the reporting line.
Knowledge and Skills Required:
1. Knowledge in highway maintenance desirable.
2. Experience in highway inspections preferable.
3. Ability to communicate clearly and concisely with internal and external stakeholders.
4. Able to work well within a team to ensure a joined-up service is provided.
5. Ability to maintain accurate written records.
6. LANTRA Highway Inspection qualification preferred but not essential.
7. NHSS12D and T7 qualification preferred but not essential.
8. Basic competency in the use of IT business software.
9. Ability to use data capture devices in the field.
