Senior Principal Physicist, Radiation Safety and Diagnostic Radiology
We are looking for a person with experience to act as the Radiation Safety Site lead at Newham University Hospital and to also take the lead in the patient dosimetry programme. You need experience as an MPE in Diagnostic Radiology and in radiation protection in healthcare to help lead the Radiation Safety services.
The aim of this post is to provide closer MPE/RPA working with the clinical departments and being more integrated into the clinical teams. You will also work with the site leadership teams on the site radiation protection programme.
You must be registered with the HCPC as a Clinical Scientist and have MPE certification. An RPA certificate of competence or the ability to submit an application within 6 months is also required.
The Radiation Safety Section is based at the Royal London Hospital. You will be expected to spend time at your lead site and to work on all Trust and client sites.
Main duties of the job
To act as an appointed Radiation Protection Adviser and Medical Physics Expert in Diagnostic Radiology for the Trust and for outside contracts, as required under The Ionising Radiation Regulations 2017 and The Ionising Radiations (Medical Exposures) Regulations 2017 respectively. To assist with the management and provision of radiation safety advice and services for all uses of ionising radiation in the Trust and diagnostic radiology physics support to the Trust and to other organisations who have contracts with Clinical Physics and in particular to act as the Radiation Safety Site lead RPA/MPE for Newham University Hospital, one of the Barts Health hospitals, and work closely with the site leadership team and the Head of Radiation Safety on the radiation protection programme. To manage the patient dosimetry service provided by Radiation Safety across all sites.
Newham University Hospital has X-Ray equipment in the Radiology Department in the main hospital building, at the Gateway Surgical Centre, and at Shrewsbury Road Health Clinic. The Radiology Department has 2 CT scanners, fluoroscopy, general X-ray rooms, and mammography. Mammography is a networked service managed by the St Bartholomew's Hospital site.
The Barts Health Orthopaedic Centre (BHOC) at Gateway Surgical Centre and Shrewsbury Road Health Clinic have general X-ray rooms. Mobile X-ray equipment is used in A&E, wards, and in the Gateway Surgical Centre, including a mini c-arm.

Experience
* Experience to act as an RPA
* Experience to act as a Medical Physics Expert in Diagnostic Radiology
* Experience in patient dosimetry and use of patient dose management systems
* Experience of managing and supervising staff
Skills
* Able to understand and operate a wide range of diagnostic imaging equipment
* Able to analyse complex data
* Able to interpret and apply relevant guidance and legislation
Knowledge
* Specialist knowledge (MPE level) in radiation and imaging physics as applied in medicine
* Specialist knowledge of radiation protection legislation in healthcare and biomedical research
* Knowledge of patient dosimetry techniques and software
Qualifications
* BSc (Hons) Physics or equivalent
* MSc in Radiation Physics or equivalent experience
