The Virtual Fracture Clinic has been a recent, exciting addition to our trauma pathway and we are now in a position to recruit 2 substantive specialist practitioners for the service.
This is a specialist role with a focus on patients presenting to the ED or minor injury units with newly diagnosed fractures or soft tissue injuries to receive quality care via a telephone consultation service.
You will need to be skilled and experienced in the diagnosis and treatment pathways of these injuries as you will be advising and reassuring patients on self-care and treatment whilst listening for red flags and recognising those who need to attend for a face-to-face consultation.
Initially, the role will focus on the telephone appointments but as time evolves there will be development opportunities for you to maintain a hands-on role to maintain clinical skills within the orthopaedic fracture clinic or ward setting.
The role is looking for someone with a background and passion for trauma and orthopaedics who can take ownership for their own learning and development and who can challenge themselves. You will be keen to develop a service, implement changes and able build relationships across the wider team. You will have responsibility for the supervision and management of the small, designated virtual fracture clinic admin team.
Main duties of the job
As a senior and experienced practitioner, you will work alongside the Orthopaedic Consultant to provide a Virtual Fracture Clinic (VFC) service which encompasses both telephone and face-to-face follow-up clinics.
You will assist in the triaging of referrals from local Emergency Departments and Minor Injury Units to the VFC and subsequently conduct telephone consultations with the VFC patients.
Using advanced clinical reasoning and assessment skills will ensure the patient understands the diagnosis and treatment of the injury or presentation and provide advice in line with VFC guidelines followed up with a clinic letter.
You will recognise when an onward referral for further consultation or treatment programmes is indicated and have access to requesting of diagnostics to facilitate the pathway.
This role has a real emphasis on education, research, and service development. You will have the opportunity to lead on and participate in projects to develop the service and enhance patient care. You will undertake ongoing evaluation of the service, your work and current practice through audit and outcome measures and maintain your professional portfolio.
To work alongside the VFC administration staff, to ensure appropriate allocations of appointments and the smooth running of the service.
To safely manage clinical risk at an enhanced level within your caseload.
