Clinical responsibilities To work with the multi-disciplinary team to provide optimum pain relief and symptom management for in-patients. To deliver nursing care according to the NMC standards. To participate in the provision of technical devices in delivering acute pain relief and support for patients and staff using these devices. To evaluate the effectiveness of clinical interventions for pain management. To ensure a safe environment for patients under the care of the Pain Management Service To assist, advise and support clinical areas in achieving Trust-agreed standards of pain management. Participate and complete the Non- medical prescribers course and prescribe appropriately as a non-medical prescriber within the Trust after gaining 12 months of inpatient pain management experience. In line with the NMC and national guidelines for nurse prescribers. To promote communication between the multi-disciplinary members of the Pain Management Service and clinical areas, in order to ensure seamless continuity of care and delivery of service is maintained. To act as a specialist resource on all aspects of pain management and related symptom control, using current research to underpin clinical practice. To assess inpatients (and outpatients) with pain, manage and implement plans of care, and/or refer appropriately across the Pain Services. Work in accordance with Trust policies and procedures relating to Health and Safety, and Risk management, in order that a safe working environment is maintained. Undertakes clinical procedures that require dexterity and accuracy e.g. management of Rectus sheath catheter and other regional techniques Undertake and run clinics which involve follow up and review of, e.g. TENS/ modulators; Patient pain diaries; Lidocaine infusion service: this list is not exhausted. Managerial responsibilities To assist in maintenance of effective resource management To assist in ensuring that all Trust policies and guidelines relating to pain management in the clinical setting are regularly updated and are adhered to. To attend and participate in appropriate meetings or sub-groups. To maintain records of clinical and training activity. To adhere to procedures related to the reporting of clinical incidents and drug errors. To uphold the tenets of clinical governance. Maintain good leadership and communication skills. Deputises for the Clinical Nurse Specialist in their absence, and supports the CNS and Lead Nurse within the service. Education and professional development To assume and demonstrate responsibility for own professional and educational development. To critically appraise and synthesise the outcomes of relevant research and apply them to own practice. To assist in development of patient education brochures/ packages in order to promote patient autonomy and informed decision-making on analgesic choices. To assist in development and organisation and delivery of the pain management educational strategy. To abide by the NMC Code of Professional Conduct and work towards becoming a higher level practitioner. Participate in Active Learning Session group or Clinical Supervision on a regular basis. To assist in the development and the delivery of Trust staff education. Participate in team building/ communication activities to develop a cohesive and effective team. Acts as a positive role model for other Trust staff and students Teaches patient and their families/ carers about managing pain Participates in the planning, delivery and evaluation of the in-house education and training programme for all disciplines of staff Use reflection to identify and prioritise education/ development needs Undertakes any training required in order to maintain competency, including essential mandatory training Work to achieve and work accordingly against the Royal College of Nursing KSF competencies for Pain Management. Research and Audit To audit activity within the clinical areas to ensure that agreed standards for acute pain management have been met. To promote use of evidence-based practice through use of information technology and extensive reading. To support research projects being undertaken by the Pain Management Team. Contributes and participates in policy, practice and service change arising from audits, research, complaints etc. Professional responsibilities Conduct oneself in accordance with the NMC Code of Conduct and Trust policies. To keep up to date with publications, guidelines and recommendations of professional bodies and specialist pain societies. Develop new skills and knowledge pertaining to pain management. Take responsibility for self-development through the appraisal system, NMC revalidation, 1:1 with line manager and work towards completing agreed personal development plan. Promote awareness and compliance amongst colleagues regarding Trust policies, procedures, guidelines and standards. To be aware of and take appropriate action in regard to cardiac arrest, fire and major incident. Contribute to the delivery of the Trusts Nursing Strategy.
