Peninsula Community Legal Centre (PCLC) is one of 49 community legal centres in Victoria. It operates across six local government areas in the south east of Melbourne – Cardinia, Casey, Frankston, Glen Eira, Kingston and Mornington Peninsula. PCLC is headquartered in Frankston and has branch offices in Bentleigh, Cranbourne, Frankston North and Rosebud.
PCLC works to empower and support disadvantaged community members of the South Eastern and Westernport region to use the law and legal system to protect and advance their rights and broaden their awareness of their responsibilities. PCLC offers general legal advice and casework services, specialist family law, tenancy, family violence, rooming house and social work programs, and is active in community legal education and law reform work.
Job Description
Position Objective
The Communications Officer will work with the PCLC Executive Team and key PCLC staff to implement our communication strategy. The Communications Officer will play a key role in highlighting the work of PCLC and the issues impacting our client base through external communications and media. The Communications Officer is responsible for drafting clear, concise and effective messaging in a variety of channels for a diverse range of audiences, reviewing and providing feedback.
Key Accountability Areas
1. Develop an annual communication workplan / calendar aligned with the Communication Strategy and PCLC’s strategic objectives and priorities.
2. Work collaboratively across the organisation to ensure the delivery of clear, concise and accessible communication services and products.
3. Work closely with the CEO, Director Legal Services & Director Business & Operations to ensure all external communications are consistent with PCLC’s brand policies and legal practice guidelines.
4. Generate proactive media opportunities to promote the work of PCLC.
5. Liaise with the PCLC Executive team to identify communication opportunities to address service gaps.
6. Coordinate or assist with coordinating key events throughout the year with written materials including a communication plan.
7. Support external communication of PCLC through the use of digital tools, including videos.
8. Build and maintain positive relationships with key stakeholders, media organisations, community organisations and government.
9. Ensure project deliverables and milestones are delivered on time and within budget.
10. Monitor the effectiveness of communication strategies initiatives using evidence-based practice to inform continuous improvement and alignment with PCLC’s strategic goals.
11. Provide regular updates and reports to PCLC executive and stakeholders on program process, challenges and outcomes.

Reports to : Chief Executive Officer, Director Legal Services, Director Business & Operations

Other Relevant Information
1. You will be required to travel to community venues and PCLC service locations. Access to a reliable and comprehensively insured motor vehicle is a requirement.
2. Ensure compliance with all Privacy Legislation and treat all information of a personal and sensitive nature concerning the business of PCLC and its clients, in a professional and confidential manner in accordance with PCLC’s information and records management procedures.
3. Ensure that all PCLC policies, procedures, systems and work practices are implemented and adhered to, in particular, in human resource management, risk management and customer service.
4. Act in a professional manner at all times while performing duties for and / or representing PCLC in line with the Staff Code of Conduct.
5. An attractive remuneration package will be negotiated with the successful applicant. Salary packaging is available.
Desired Skills and Experience
Selection Criteria
1. Relevant tertiary qualifications in communications, law, marketing, multimedia or similar field, or relevant experience, preferably in law, social sciences, community development or related field.
2. Excellent communication, relationship building skills, political acumen and sound decision making.
3. Ability to produce and edit copy to ensure quality, consistency and accessibility, applying a strong understanding of accessible writing techniques.
4. Knowledge of and understanding of online technologies and social media.
5. Ability to set priorities, monitor workflow, maintain deadlines, exercise initiative and judgment in changing environments.
6. Experience with videography and photography.
7. Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to engage a wide range of stakeholders, including sector partners, government and community groups.
8. Ability to work autonomously, while maintaining connection and communication with colleagues and stakeholders.
9. Demonstrated knowledge of and commitment to social justice principles, understanding of legal assistance sector and a commitment to PCLC’s vision and values.
